About Meghan

I will put in as much time as necessary on my end to help you learn however best suits you. I will help you succeed by spending the appropriate amount of time on my end reviewing your course lecture material, finding additional resources for you, preparing practice problems, etc. I also have a lot of experience in a wide variety of tutoring services, so I am aware of many learning styles and how to accommodate them. Additionally, I only graduated from undergrad in 2019, so it has not been very many years since I was also a student. Therefore, I am able to understand where you are coming from as a student and I believe that understanding in itself will help me to provide you with the best services possible.

I really enjoy being able to see my students succeed, whether that be getting an "A" on an exam/homework assignment, an improvement in your overall grade since we started tutoring, or just being able to understand new concepts and work on problems on your own without help. I have struggled in school before, so I know how frustrating it is to work so hard and not see that reflected in a grade. However, I applaud you for seeking out help, as I did similarly, and I hope to be the one there to see the improvement and enjoyment that comes out of your learning. Helping others succeed in similar ways to my own success, is what makes tutoring such a rewarding experience for me!

I do not have experience as a formal teacher, but I do have plenty of experience in tutoring. During undergrad, I worked as a tutor in the student success center at my university for multiple years teaching a wide variety of subjects to students of all ages. I also worked as a Teaching Assistant (TA) where I presented mini lectures on the material and worked through a lab with my students. Through this position, I graded labs and exams, so it provided me with a lot of insight into how my students learned and then how they performed on exams. Lastly, I worked as a supplemental instructor (SI) for multiple years in college. This position is similar to a TA, but I held review sessions 3x/week, attended lectures, and held large exam reviews.

In terms of my training, I attended a 4-year university and majored in Nutrition and Dietetics on the pre-medical track. Following undergrad, I completed a post-bacculaurate program in Human Anatomy where I took courses for my future in medical school. I am currently taking the year off from academics due to the online environment due to COVID-19, but I will matriculate into medical school in the Fall of 2021. Therefore, I have vast experience in the sciences and math courses, but have also taken and performed very well in a wide variety of other subjects. I have taken many difficult standardized exams and have performed well on those as well, so I am able to tutor for standardized exam preparation too. I have experience tutoring in standardized exam preparation.

In working with a new student, my typical process varies depending on the subject area. However, for most areas, I like to gauge knowledge and learning styles during our first session, and then work from there. If you are currently a student and need help with course material, I ask that you upload some of your powerpoints, class material, syllabus, etc. to a google folder and share that with me so I can best accomodate your needs. I will also typically use that (and other resources if you do not have course material) to prepare practice problems and material to utilize during our tutoring session. I spend a lot of time outside of the tutoring session preparing resources for you, so I believe my tutoring rate is worth the cost for you.

Additionally, if you have a specific way of learning or specific topics you would like to spend time on during our tutoring session, I am more than happy to accomodate to that. You can run the tutoring session however you would like, but if you want me to prepare things for us to do, I can do that as well. I am very much flexible and willing to work towards your needs!

Through my own experience using tutors, I believe you should always ask questions. Make sure your tutor has thorough expertise in that subject area so they can understand the concepts on an even deeper level than you might need to know. This helps so much with the tutor being able to explain the concept in multiple ways! I also believe it's important for the tutor to have experience in teaching/tutoring, so make sure to ask about that as well. I have had teachers that are incredibly smart, but have trouble verbalizing the information in a way that's easy to understand, and I have also had teachers that just make difficult concepts seem so simple - find a tutor that does the latter because it will make a world of difference. But most importantly, don't be afraid to ask questions, no matter how silly they may seem. You are paying a tutor for their services, so you want to make sure those are the services you need.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I recognize that some tutors want students with specific goals and outcomes, but if you genuinely don't know what you need or simply want general subject improvement, I'm willing to help!

However, one of the most important things a student could be aware of is his/her learning styles. Through my tutoring experiences, I've come to recognize there are SO many ways people learn best, and everybody has their own unique way of doing that. As a tutor, if you know how you learn best, I think it would be very beneficial if you shared that with me so I can accomodate my teaching/tutoring to your needs. I am willing to go above and beyond by putting in as much time on my end to help you learn, and by providing me with information as to whether you're more of a visual, auditory, etc. learner, I can provide resources and tutoring specific to that.
