About Josh

Hey folks!

I (Josh Medlock) have been a private and university-sanctioned math tutor for years. I've also worked with middle-schoolers in both enrichment programs and standard curriculum.

I primarily assist with Algebra and Calculus, but I can be a helpful higher-level college math tutor, as I'll graduate with such a degree shortly. I'm also a fairly competent programmer.

Too often, students struggle to develop strong fundamentals because their early teachers were incompetent and impatient. As a victim of that myself, I'm very sensitive to the stressfulness of the subject, and I pride myself in my patience and kindness with my students.

After frequenting my college's math center for some time, my professor recommended me to the coordinator there, and I've been at it ever since.

I'm now a semester away from graduating with a B.S. in Mathematics (with a Computer Science cognate). Over the years, I've tutored both privately and within my university. At this time, I'm also looking to pick up more students at the local community college.

About the lesson

I try to get a sense of what the student's background is with the topic. I'm happy to work on particular exercises, or coming up withour own to demonstrate a concept.

I've worked with college students, giftend schoolchildren in enrichment programs, and in the classroom with younger students in a standard curriculum.

Try to bring some of your own work to a session. It helps the instructor to get an idea of what's going on.

Also, frankly, work with somebody you actually like. Having an unfriendly or impatient tutor can make things harder than they already are.

I've become especially active in my college math community after spending some time away from it. Enrolling again after a break has been exciting for me.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It really depends on the context. Sometimes the problem isn't conceptual, rather the exercise is just a difficult one. Other times, knowing the section from which the exercise comes is essential. Even if we're unable to crack a problem then and there, I can still provide helpful advice and suggestions.
