About Collin

I have been tutoring individual students since I was in highschool in 2015. For the past three years I've worked as an undergraduate course assistant for my university's computer science programs core probability and statistics course and in the fall I will be joining them as a full-time TA. I have helped hundreds of students with their homework both from inside and outside the classroom and I hope I can help you too!

I started tutoring as a senior in high school for extra money.

I have a BS in mathematics with focuses in statistics and mathematical computing as well as a BS in computer science. I've worked on the faculty of the CS departments core statistics class for six consecutive semesters and will continue as a TA in the CS department.

About the lesson

Have the student walk through their thought process on a problem so that I can pinpoint what and in which reasoning step the issue lies. Often the most confusing issues arise when we're doing the problem mostly correctly and are only missing or have a couple flawed steps. If the entire understanding of the problem is clouded, then we will walk through the problem step by step until it is clear.

I started by working with middle school students, but have been dealing with college students since my arrival at college.

Find someone who understands math the same way that you do. There are many different ways to learn and understand math and the best teacher for someone else may not be the best for you. For example, I learn by doing a problem; once I do a couple examples I remember the process and can replicate it again. Others are auditory or visual learners or learn by talking it out with other peers.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Make sure you've already consulted your textbook/notes and attempted the problem or similar examples before. If you can get part of the way through the problem, try to have a desription prepared of where and why you get lost. Also, try to think of the problem in contained steps and write down which steps you've already completed, how you know they're correct (if possible like if you know the units or if you know it should be between 1-10), and what the troubling steps should be doing or what types of answers you could expect.
