About Caitlin

Hey, y'all! My name is Caitlin, and I'm SO excited you're here! I am a full-time college student native to St. Petersburg, FL, and I tutor in a variety of subjects — my favourites are math, science, and Spanish. I am new to tutoring, but my educational foundation is solid. I have a BA in criminology from the University of South Florida, and I am currently pursuing a BS in computer science. I am comfortable tutoring in college math courses up to and including Calculus II. I have completed Java I & II, as well as Introduction to Python, so I am comfortable in the basics of both languages, and would love to work with any students that need additional help with these subjects. I am also able to tutor high school math, biology, anatomy, English, and Spanish.

I want each student with whom I work to come out of every session feeling confident in their learning abilities. I tailor my tutoring approach to the specific needs of my students, and I like to involve them in this process by spending the first few minutes of each session helping them outline their goals for the session. From here, as most of my students are adults (or near-adults), I let them decide how the session plays out, but I hold them accountable for reaching the goals we set together. I never consider myself superior to my students. I prefer to approach tutoring with a peer-to-peer mindset to encourage mututal respect, and I want my students to feel comfortable asking questions when they do not understand something. I make sure that my students know they should never feel embarrassed about asking for clarification, and I encourage them to share with me the ways they think they learn best so that I can tailor my approach accordingly.

About the lesson

When working with a new student, I first like to assess need. Will this be a one-time session, or an ongoing tutoring relationship? I like to get to know my students both personally and academically. I ask them to tell me a bit about themselves, their interests, and their academic strengths and challenges. I ask them about their goals for tutoring and how I can help them achieve those goals. Then we work together to create a plan of action, taking into account any factors, both internal and external, that may affect the student's progress toward their goals. This process remains ongoing, and we spend the first few minutes of each session reviewing progress and planning for what the student wants to accomplish in that session.
