About Elizabeth

I am a college graduate with over 9 years of tutoring experience. In junior high and high school, I began helping my classmates and friends in math (pre-algebra, algebra) and continued to tutor math (statistics, calculus) throughout college. I worked for Mathnasium (an in-person tutoring company) for about a year teaching kids in grades K-12. My Bachelor’s degree is in Mathematics with a concentration in Statistics. I am passionate about tutoring math because of the real-world applications. I love helping people realize math is not challenging once you understand the concepts. I love sharing tips and tricks I learned in college that I wish I'd known when I took those subjects for the first time.

I like to talk through the problems with my students, answering their questions while asking questions of my own to assess their understanding, then sharing tips and tricks to help them build confidence. I remember what it was like to learn this content for the first time, so I like to explain concepts in intuitive ways before tying it to theory that students might be exposed to in class. Finding the process and study plan that works for each student is important!

My specialty subjects are K-12 Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calc., Business Calc., Calc. I, Calc. II, Calc. III, and Multivariable Calc. I used to just help friends out with math after I would finish my own class work. I found it fulfilling seeing the moment of understanding come across their face. Those moments of realizing math isn't hard and that they just needed it explained differenlty or that they just needed a few more examples is what made me start teaching.

I have a bacherlor of science degree in Mathematics with a concentration in Statistics from the University of Texas at Dallas. I also worked for Mathnasium teaching kids inn grades K-12.

About the lesson

I ask what they need help with in math or show me what they are working on in class. Then I ask them to explain how they would solve one of their problems so I can get an idea of what they already know and don't know. Next, I would teach them the concept step by step and then do some practice problems with them. After that, I ask them to work a couple of problems either outloud or with them showing all of their steps.

Depending on the level of math and the student, I may also recommend the parents get the student counting blocks or some other physical representation for a more hands-on approach to math.

I have worked with students K-12 and college students. I have taught addition all the way to partial derivatives.

Find a tutor who is pationate about math and helping you understand. Also look for a tutor who knows how to explain a topic in more than one way.

I remeber I would get frustrated when I was told the same explanation over and over again. I make it a point to only repeat an explanation 2 or 3 times before I try to explain the concept differently.

One of my students told me that math class is now their favorite core class. When they had first started tutoring with me, it was their least favorite.
