About Liz

I'm a curriculum designer and mathematics facilitator for a large school district in Texas. I love math, but most of all I love helping others to love math.

I began teaching in 2009, and I've taught 6th grade-11th grade math courses. I've been a lead teacher, a mentor teacher, math teacher of the year, and I currently design a curriculum for secondary mathematics courses for my school district.

For my first job after college, I was a life insurance actuary. I tutored math on a voluntary basis in the evenings. Through my volunteer work, I discovered that I love teaching. At that point, I decided to make a big career change, and I'm thankful for that decision every day.

Bachelors - Actuarial Science (UTSA)

Masters - Mathematics Education (UTA)

Completion of principal certification program (Lamar)

When working with a new student, my first step is to determine their learning goals. I use those goals to create an outline of topics to discuss in tutoring. Aligning tutorials directly to student goals ensures that tutoring time is efficient, productive, and genuinely helpful.

I have worked with many, many groups of students.

Middle school and high school public school students. Community college math lab students. GED night school students. Private school students. Math/science summer campers. SAT Prep students.

Advanced students, struggling students, and everyone in between.

Students with special learning needs.

Students learning English.

I have yet to discover a group of students that I don't enjoy working with.

Before hiring a tutor, consider your learning goals. What do you want to learn? Can you identify specific skills or topics?

Look for a tutor with a background in those areas, and tell them specifically what you are hoping to learn. Ensure that they have both teaching experience and a strong mathematics background.

Commit to one "trial" tutorial to see how it goes. If that experience helps you to enjoy math more and reach your goals, you've found the right tutor.

I coordinated an edcamp for math teachers in the DFW metroplex area. It was so much help bring math teachers together to share ideas, learn from each other, and celebrate our career on a Saturday morning.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should consider what they most want to accomplish during tutorials. Are they hoping for a higher SAT score? Higher grades in their math class? Help with homework? Improved critical thinking skills?

When students know what they want, they will be able to determine whether their tutor is helping them make progress towards that end.
