About Ian

I was not a good student in high school in fact I had to transfer to an alternative school due to my learning difficulties. So I understand your frustration with the education system and want to let you know there is hope. I recently graduated from Lewis ansd Clark College with my Bachelors of Arts in physics. I was able to obtain this difficult degree from an intense school by way of my problem solving techniques and organization and this is what I would like to share with the student.

I have my bachelors degree in physics. This degree gives me an insight into mathematics and critical thinking skills that most school teachers do not have.

About the lesson

When working with a new student the process is as follows:

-I gauge the students comfort level with the topic and allow the student to discuss any concern's that they may have. It is at this time I begin to cultivate a learning enviroment based around asking questions

-I will then spend more time then most school teachers reviewing the basics of the topic to provide the student solid ground from which to learn from.

-I then will start problem solving with the student focusing on many simple problems. Teaching many simple problems at first allows the student to understand the topic conceptually before diving into more complicated material. I find the student learns quicker this way rather than throwing too much too soon at the student.

-To check retention at the beginning of the second session I will give the student one question on the last session. If I feel the student understands the topic we move on, if not we try again

I would look for a teacher with a laid back attitude. Math and science are challenging by nature and most people do not come to them easily. So it is important that your teacher be someone who is understanding of your specific learning style and will not become frustrated going over topics multiple times.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Before talking to a teacher I would recommend stepping away from the problem for at least an hour but up to a day if you have time. This gives a fresh perspective on the problem and more than half of the time the answer will come to you the second time you look at the problem.
