About Tavie

I am a high school senior ready to tutor elementary, middle, and high school students in math. A lot of students have been moved to distance learning right now. As a student myself, I know how hard it is to learn over a computer. I am ready to provide support and human interaction to help students keep learning.

I also provide test prep for students worried about being unprepared in the fall. Within six months I took the SAT twice. Between the first and second time, I jumped 120 points to earn a 1580 (Mar 2019). I teach how to study efficiently.

I love it when an explanation clicks with a student and they switch from frustrated and confused to 'I kind of get it now'. It's a wonderful feeling when people gain confidence.

I know that virtual school during this quarantine is not a good replacement for classroom learning. I want to help students feel confident and ready to continue with math next year.

I am a senior at Lincoln High School here in Portland, OR. I have completed math up through an IB HL Math course (the first semester of college calculus, plus some statistics and a little linear algebra). I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA.

I have tutored students in math before, and volunteer to help with math homework during our free period. Additionally, I spent two years as a captain on the debate team where I led and taught practices weekly.

For students interested in test prep, I earned a 1580 last year on the SAT (Mar 2019). This was my second time taking the test, and a 120 point jump from my original score. I know how to study efficiently.

About the lesson

I ask students and their families to tell me about themselves. I want to now about the student: who they are, what they love, and what they are scared to try.

I need to know what a student hopes to get out of my services. Are they wanting help with an ongoing class? Are they hoping to learn independently? From there, we can create a learning plan together.

I also want to know how a student learns best. Are they comfortable with independent readings? Would they prefer to discuss new concepts before or after they have grappled with them independently? Are they a visual learner that needs to draw or model concepts before they fully sinks in? I want to know.

I have worked with a variety of students. I have worked with some very capable students at my high school. I have also taught a monthly poetry workshop at a local youth shelter with students who are not comfortable in a classroom at all.

I know that no two students are exactly the same. I am excited to learn about you and how you learn best!

Recently, I've been having a great time baking bread. It is a good way to feel productive and work with my hands while stuck at home all day. Plus, it smells funky and tastes great (at least most of the time).
