Academically, my daughter has struggled in math her entire life. For as gifted as she is the arts and reading, math has never been something she could understand. Algebra was another anxiety going into middle school. In all honesty, I was reasonably confident she would not pass her SOL test. Once we were into the first nine weeks of school, both Grace and I were seeing Algebra differently. You were able to take a student who struggles and make her more confident. Most importantly, she understood the abstract concepts of the content. At times, it was harder than others. I clearly recall Grace not understanding factoring. After arguing over her homework, she declared that she would work with you over lunch. It took more than a few lunches, but she got it. You went over every test she didn’t do well on and gave her credit for her corrections, rewarding her learning. Although I would not call her a confident math student,
she knows from her experience in your class that she can learn difficult math concepts, even though it is a struggle. You taught her that the learning is in that struggle. She is a more confident learner, which should always be our goal as teachers.
I write this through tears of gratitude for all you have been to Grace and our family. You will always be the fairy godmother in Grace’s school story. You went above and beyond in helping my student with difficulties he had in life sciences class in the seventh grade. By working with Charlie, you not only helped him understand the material, you helped him gain his confidence back after a miserable first half of the school year in that class. Your help in life science and your challenging and engaging pre-algebra class were vital to his success in seventh grade.
Finally, you were such a tremendous help to my son last year with the tutoring you provided him for his honors geometry class. He ended up with a B for the year (he was failing in the first quarter) and it is in no small part thanks to your work with him. I am so grateful that you were willing to help him since we knew with you he would learn the material, and again, gain his confidence back after a very difficult semester.
It has been a pleasure working with you over the past three years. My son was so fortunate to have been assigned to your class in 7th grade. Your classroom was a place Charlie could feel comfortable, challenged, engaged, and supported. From my perspective as a parent, I could not have asked for a more supportive teacher. You have always been willing to help above and beyond your own classroom and, I think, inspired Charlie to do his best work. To me, that's the definition of a great educator.Ms. Carr is a rare teacher who went above and beyond what was expected and helped my son with many issues he had while in the 8th grade. I can honestly say that without her I don't know that he would have passed his class without her helping him before school and during lunch hours. I was touched by Liz and how much she cared for our son and how much she reached out to us. She took time out of her day to call or email if she noticed when he wasn't himself or just seemed like things were bothering him. Liz was always friendly, positive and professional. Ms Carr to the time to listen and talk to her students. She was compassionate and cared about them and their opinions. She would do what she could to help them. I don't know that I can express how truly blessed and grateful I am to have gotten the chance to know her. Liz Carr is by far one of our favorite teachers and memories from our son's middle school years.
