About Christian

The goal of my tutoring is to get your student to the point where they no longer need a tutor. The academic material is important, and I will help your student thrive academically. However, I aim to help your student grow as a person; gaining skills in self-management, self-efficacy, and self-disciple, as well as goal setting, and achievement. I will not only teach your child how to be effective student, but how to be an effective and successful person in whatever life throws at them.

The most rewarding thing about my work is seeing when a topic or idea "clicks" with the student I am working with. Whether it be math, science, english, or planning, when the “ah ha” moment arrives and the student is ready to fully take the wheel on a specific subject, it cannot be more rewarding.

Teaching has always been a hidden passion of mine. All through highschool and college tutoring my peers was always a joy. Not only was it rewarding to help others learn, but it deeped my knowledge of the subjects as well. Teaching was always an informal process to me until I realized this is what I want to do for my career. Then it was simply a matter of refining the skills I have developed informally, and enroll in a teaching program, and I could not be happier.

I was previously a teacher at several elementary and middle after school programs though Youth and Family Link. This was a very rewarding and developing experience where I was able to refine my teaching style. I am currently in my final year at Western Governors University to attain my teaching degree. My time at WGU has allowed me to become a more effective and impactful teacher; learning how to make a lasting change in a student’s effectiveness, both academically, and non-academically.

About the lesson

I have found the best way to find out where a student is, is just to jump in. The student and I will go through a normal lesson, while I conduct an informal interview; learning about the student's intrests, motivations, strenghts, weaknesses, classes, academic standing and confidence in those classes. I use all of this information to develop a plan to best help them learn.

I have hands on, paid professional experience largely with elementary, and middle school students during my time teaching at afterschool programs. However, informal peer tutoring, and study groups has been a constant in my life since my freshman year at highschool. Helping my friends with their algebra at lunch, or meeting my fellow classmates at the library in between our physics and calculus class. I have tutored from kindergarten to college.

I am a firm believer in the idiom, "give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." Yes your math, english, and social studies grade is important, but the best way to improve those things is to invest in yourself. Knowing how to do your homework is not as helpful if you have issues with procrastination. Being able to write an effective or persuasive paper is useless if you don’t have the motivation or self-efficacy to write. If you can develop personal skills alongside academic skills, you will be unstoppable. Find that in a tutor.
