About Natalie

Hi! Thanks for viewing my profile. My name is Natalie Masetti, and I'm a prospective Mathematics major at Haverford College. I am also planning on minoring in Education to eventually get my teaching certificate, and will probably take some courses in Psychology as well! I am 20 years old and have a 3.84 GPA average, and I was valedictorian of my high school (huge nerd). I tutored in geometry and Spanish in high school for 2 years, and tutored children in Philadelphia for about a month before COVID. I am passionate about education, especially mathematics education. I believe that learning math should be fun, inspiring, and full of creative thinking. I believe our education system fails to make learning math accessible and enjoyable, and that's why students are discouraged in math class.

I am not a teacher. But, I started being interested in teaching when I took an Education course in December 2020. I learned how flawed our education system is due to a plethora of deep-rooted social and economic issues in our society. I wanted to be a positive change in the education of the future generations of students!

When I was a sophomore and a junior in high school, I was a peer tutor for geometry and Spanish. During this time, I helped my peers learn how to study and what it takes to make that extra step forward to get a better grade. I was also valedictorian in my class, and so I cultivated my own skillset in self-teaching, communicating with teachers, studying, and seeking out resources. When I was a freshman in college, I briefly tutored 5th-grade students in Philadelphia with the Puentes de Salud program. Quarantine began not soon after-but, despite the short timeframe, I learned how to communicate with younger students and motivate them to succeed, not just "finish their homework." I was also briefly an advisor for a program called Matriculate, which helped me learn how to establish routines, methods of communication, and teach accountability.

About the lesson

When working with a new student, the student and I will first review their goals (or make goals if the student doesn't have them). We will work on making realistic and flexible goals that will motivate the student to succeed. Then we will establish a routine: when, where, how, for how long, and what the student should be studying. This will vary depending on the students' needs! This routine will help keep the student accountable and provides structure that fits with their schedule. Then, the student and I work together to set up methods of communication that work for both of us, be it email, text, video chat, or phone calls.

I have worked with high school freshman, sophomores, and seniors, and 5th-grade students. I have also worked with students that speak Spanish.

For the month or so I travelled to Philadelphia after my college courses, I had the pleasure of working with 5th grade students and helping them do their homework. They could do their homework in Spanish if they so wished. I am relatively proficient at Spanish, but I didn't understand a word on the homework. The student was able to teach me some new words in Spanish I had never heard before!
