About Ashley

Currently attending college, I'm a passionate tutor with lots of experience in helping students. I was a long-term tutor for Shelby High School and the Marvin Memorial Library. I love to see people grow and I truly love to learn. I will do all that I can to see someone succeed.

I was recruited during high school by my guidance counsellor and began to tutor more and more because I have always done well in school and I enjoy learning. this leads to me enjoying the process of teaching because I get to share that knowledge with others and help them work through and watch them grow.

I graduated High School with a 4.0 GPA and currently have a 3.5 in College. I have experience with tutoring throughout high school working at the school and local library. I have, as well, been a private tutor in the past to elementary students over the summers.

About the lesson

Before the session, ask what the student needs help with. Prepare for the sessions with a set of questions or activities to work on during. If during school time, we could also work through the homework. Depending on the subject lessons can range from simple explanations to actual study strategies such as flashcards, working through problems, or reviewing projects.

I have worked with everyone from K-12. I tend to tutor middle school but I have experience with all ages. I am open to college freshmen, as I am entering my sophomore year, but I cannot tutor except for classes I have already taken.

My advice would be to look for someone who is open to different learning styles. I have found myself needing tutoring in college and the biggest lesson I took out of that was that knowing how you learn is essential. As someone with ADHD, I require a very hands-on learning experience and I now look for that in a tutor. Also, ask questions! Don't be shy to reach out and test the waters with someone.

I'm not sure if this has to be teaching-related but, I work on the campus greenhouse at college and we had a plant sale that I enjoyed working at. I got to tell everyone about our plants and sit outside all day selling.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How do I learn best? (Do I tune out during lectures? Are projects a burden to my learning, or are they fun?)

Do I need to learn the content or the process? (memorization or application?)

Do I need this for the future, or do I need to pass this class and move on? (for older students)
