About Gretchen

I've been teaching 20 plus years with a PA and a VA teaching certificate. I taught math and science to middle school students in Virginia for 10 of those years. My strengths are organization, discipline, and building relationships with my students. I am very flexible with days and hours and we'll negotiate with prices as well.

After graduating from college, I was positive that I wanted to work directly with children however, I was not sure in what capacity. My first job was as a child care counselor at a residential treatment facility. I absolutely loved that job however, I've always wanted to move south. A family member was teaching in VA at the time and advised me of teaching positions in Fredericksburg, VA. I took a leap of faith, drove to VA to interview for an 8th grade teaching position, was hired and in the next couple of weeks, I was moving south.

I have a B.S. in Education from Kutztown University. I have my teaching license in both Pennsylvania and Virginia and have had my own tutoring business for the past 3 years. I have taught physical science, earth science, biology, Basic Math, Algebra and World History.

About the lesson

First session is spent breaking the ice, so to speak, and getting to know my students strengths and how they learn the best.

The question should be, "what types of students have I NOT worked with?" I have worked with Advanced students, educationally disadvantaged students, behavioral challenged students, students with Autism, students with ADHD, students with physical disabilities and every other student out there. I am very confident and comfortable working with any and all types of students.

First and most importantly, the relationship between teacher and student is a priority because without a respectful, trusting and compatible bond between the two, no learning will take place.

During the time I had my tutoring business, I traveled all around PA. I accepted a client that lived and hour and 15 minutes away and wasn't sure if I wanted to travel that far however, the student ended up going through 5 other tutors before myself and I considered this a challenge. Needless to say, I was the last tutor he needed that successfully helped him get through 9th grade biology with an overall grade of a B.

I do not have a standard pricing system due to the fact that every tutoring opportunity is different as well as every student I tutor requires different levels of support. We will sit down and discuss all the factors that should affect pricing such as distance traveled, difficulty of subject, etc...
