About Marita

My name is Marita, and I am an ambitious, understanding, and patient young woman with enthusiasm for learning and creativity. I have graduated with a degree in International Studies with focus on History, Languages and Cultures, and the Academic Study of Religion. I earned honors in all of my degree subjects from Alverno College, which provides an in-depth and rigorous education, preparing me for real-world application and deep understanding of my subjects and preparing me for effectively communicating the concepts to others.

I have experience tutoring many different subjects, working with children and adults with varying abilities. I have been employed by Alverno College to tutor students in Language Arts (English, reading, vocabulary, writing, speaking), general Math, and I worked with international students to help them understand American culture and work on their spoken English and pronunciation skills.

I volunteered with the Menomonee Falls Public Library working closely with the Children's Programmer in developing, teaching, and leading creative and educational programs for children. I have grown up with a brother who has Aspergers and I have also volunteered at an Elementary School and worked with children in reading and writing and in the Special Needs department.

I am a big believer in creating a comfortable environment to foster learning, encouraging creativity and thinking outside the box, and teaching abilities and skills rather than rote memorization. I enjoy helping students explore the subject creatively, create a positive association with the subject, and I have experience adapting the teaching style to the student's best learning style.

I am LGBTQ+ friendly and religiously tolerant - I have friends and family from many walks of life. I am accommodating and understanding. I work best with secondary students and above (adult, or post-secondary), but can also work with older primary students and middle school students.

I love making a positive impact in everything I do. In working with students, that positive impact is either a learned subject or the renewal of a passion for learning.

In a time where tests are king in public school and classrooms have 30 students, it's difficult for students to really develop that curiosity that leads to lifelong learning.

I started tutoring when I was in middle school, teaching classmates English and French, and then continued my tutoring all throughout high school and then university. In university, I added on subjects - I tutored basic mathematics, English reading/writing, ESL, Mandarin Chinese, basic economics, APA citation style and general computer skills.

I worked as a TA in Economics and as a tutor for multiple years at my university. I also act as a trainer in my full-time job, working with new hires to teach them standards of service and empowering them to succeed in their new job.

I have a Bachelor of Arts from Alverno College in International Affairs and Religious Studies with a focus on East Asia and have graduated with honors in both majors.

Developing rapport with a student is an essential part of the tutoring job. A student needs to feel safe and empowered to learn properly, and getting to know my students and finding ways to relate helps develop that relationship between tutor and student.

I like to ask what their favorite subjects are and assess where they think they are at in their skills, what they want to improve on, and then look at any external requirements to create the goal together with the student.

I have worked with students from kindergarteners to graduate students, both native English speakers and ESL students.

Some of my favorite students have been foreign exchange students - I helped a young woman from Saudi Arabia with English writing for her graduate classes, and multiple Korean exchange students with writing and conversational English.

I have worked with students with ADHD, anxiety, autism and depression.

I have worked with trans students and other LGBTQ+ students.

I recently went to an anime convention down in Chicago where I met up with some friends that I haven't seen in years. Normally I go every year and dress up, but this year I didn't have time. It was fun seeing everyone in costumes and in general enjoying the friendly, open atmosphere that anime conventions typically have.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
A student should think about their learning style - do they learn better by doing, by reading about it, by hearing about it, or by all three? That way they can work with their teacher to adapt the teaching style to best fit their learning style.
