About Ellie

Hello! I have a firm belief that tutoring should be a comfortable and student-led experience. A little fun and humor can go a long way, while also keeping the focus on learning. Different students need different approaches, and I am willing to adapt to the individual student's needs.

Subjects: College Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus I, Statistics, General Biology, Environmental Biology, General Chemistry, Literature, Research-focused Writing, General Psychology, Public Speaking

Education: Associate of Science - (2020) - Wilkes Community College - 4.0 GPA

Awards: Academic Excellence Nominee (2020) ; Outstanding Achievement in Associate of Science Program (2020)

Experience: I began tutoring privately starting in Fall 2018 and I have been tutoring through the college since Fall 2019. I also spent an academic year as a Peer Mentor at the college, which included one-on-one meetings and facilitating workshops for students on subjects such as study skills and life skills.

I earned my High School Equivalency in Spring 2018 with honors. Coming from this background, I am familiar with some of the gaps in knowledge other non-traditional students may encounter.

I then earned my Associate of Science degree in Spring 2020 with two prestigious awards and a 4.0 GPA. I spent my second year of college as a peer tutor and mentor at the college. As a tutor, I've seen several types of students with different needs and accommodated them. Being a peer mentor has also given me experience with facilitating workshops and one-on-one meetings with students on study skills, life skills, and soft skills. Some subjects that have been covered in workshops of mine have included:

• Test Anxiety

• Studying Techniques to Avoid Burnout

• Note-taking

• Using Mnemonic Devices Effectively

• Reducing Stress by Journalling, Mindfulness

• Self Advocacy (in an educational setting and in life)

About the lesson

The most important task when working with a new student is establishing a sense of comfort and openness. First sessions are often more introductory and about getting a feel for what the student wants and needs in a tutor. It's important to me to meet a student where they are at. Some things I may determine during the first few sessions are study skills that may need exploring, familiarity with the subject, and preferred learning style.

I have worked with high school students, dual-enrolled high school students with college classes, traditional college students, and non-traditional college students. Several students I have worked with have non-traditional backgrounds such as not attending high school, having a large gap in education, knowing English as a second language, and/or not included in the typical age bracket.
