I actually started teaching in my first year of college. I was looking for a job at the time, but didn't want to work retail or whatever else most of my classmates were doing. So I approached the local YMCA to see if they had any openings. As a relatively fit guy, and an avid lover of movement, I figured maybe a personal coach job would be fun. Fortunately, they didn't have any openings which led me to suggest that they start a parkour class for kids. After some deliberation, and a few days of convincing, they let me start this class. Coaching has been one of the most rewarding things I've ever done with my life, and I have and hope to continue coaching and teaching students for the rest of my life, regardless of my main career path.

I have a BBA from FIU in Management and International Business. By business education has made me incredibly comfortable with the intersection between mathematics and real world problems. I have also recieved a Acting Conservatory Certificate from the Atlantic Acting School, where I learned to cater messages to my audience, allowing me to better communicate effectively with people from all walks of life.

About the lesson

The first time I meet with a new student, I like to get to know their strengths, weaknesses, learning style preference, and personality. I usually do this by spending the first session speaking to them about where they struggle, where they excel, and what they expect to get out of tutoring. This allows me to cater to their particular needs and situation.

I've worked with students of all ages. I've coached people in their 70s who want to learn basic low-impact gymnastics, I've tutored 18 year olds who were on the brink of failing their senior year of highschool, and I've taught children under 10 years old how to effectively use a camera to shoot a short film.

I would say, look for a teacher that you're comfortable just talking to. A student-teacher relationship needs to be built on trust, and while most of the tutoring sessions will be geared toward helping you succeed academically, sometimes a teacher needs to be there for emotional support as well. Being a student is hard work, and it's not just the work itself but the uncertainty of life after school and the fear of not being good enough that truly makes navigating the school system difficult

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
In reality, most of us don't know what we don't know. Therefore, a student should do their best to assess their needs before approaching a teacher, however they shouldn't feel burdened by how difficult self-assessment is. Teachers are there to teach, listen, and provide feedback. So, reach out to teachers, feel out their personality, and if you feel that your being judged or not listened to, find someone else.
