About Sandra

I am a crafter, jewelry designer, visual artist and Inventory and Production Assistant. I have a very engaging, calm demeanor, and I am very detailed oriented. I like talking to people first to see what they are familiar with, and show them step by step if they are a beginner or intermidiate student. In showing people how to paint, I find out their interest, and show the basics of drawing their subject then practice painting, by mixing and applying paint. I use acrylic paints, and color pencils. In showing people how to design jewelry, I show simple techinques that they can build on. As a crafter, I show how I make dream boxes, and mandala stones. I taught ladies at The Downtown Women's Center in the production studio how to make soap and candles, and how to package the products.

I find such joy in the creative process, and creating wearable art with my jewelry, and creating drawings, painting portraits, drawing illustrations, doing graphic design and photography.

Having an idea in my mind, and being able to make it come to life in the real world is an amazing process for me. I find showing people how to do something, and they learn to do it, fills them with accomplishment and pride.

I was invited to teach what I know thru Daybreak Designs, which is a member run Arts collaboration organization in Santa Monica.

I have been a visual artist all my life, since the age of 3, drawing my neighbor's dog. I knew I wanted to have a career as a visual artist early on, and worked as a Graphic Designer and photographer for over 30 years. I worked as a Graphic Designer and photographer at the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Dept. for 16 years. I studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Cal State Fullerton, receiving a BA Degree in Graphics and Illustration.

My extensive experience is in various art forms: painting portraits from photographs, using acrylics and colored pencils, illustrating greeting cards by hand and in Photoshop, creating hand made cards, creating stained glass work, block printed work, designing and creating gift baskets for 8 years, and making candles and soap for the Downtown Womens Center Boutique and Cafe. I was honored in 2017 to be chosen to design and create The Downtown Women's Center Annual Gala Award, presented to honorees Senator Diane Feinstein and Raul Anaya. I discovered wire wrapped jewelry 8 years ago. I am self taught and enjoy working with my hands to form wire, beads and stones into beautiful wearable art. My jewelry sold for 4 years thru Daybreak Designs and for 2 years thru the Downtown Women's Center Boutique. I have also donated my work to various charity fundraisers, most recently The Positive Results Corporation Purple Purse Event. I designed a scarf in collaboration with the City of Los Angeles' LA Original Program. The scarf is for sale at LAX, MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) and the Petersen Museum. Partial proceeds go to help programs at the Downtown Women's Center. My work has also been in the exhibition thru the LAMP Community, titled "Together More Alive-Work From Inspired Women of the LAMP Community".

About the lesson

I find out what their skill level is. If they've never drawn or painted, say real life, nature or people, then I have them do some exercises using basic shapes and shading. Showing light and dark shadowing on an object. I show how basic shapes can be combined to make different objects; like a square and rods are combined to form a hand and fingers. I personally draw using shadows and shapes to make an image appear. If its jewelry making, I use simple beads, and wire wrapping to show the technique.

I've worked with adults.

Be open minded, communicate what you need and want to accomplish; is it a hobby, just for enjoyment, or you want to learn a technique for a purpose, like a job or future endeavour. Listen and ask questions.

Going to a luncheon at a friends house last year, spending time with two good friends, relaxing in the pool, having a great visit, and showing them my latest jewelry creations, and having them buy from me.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
what do you want to learn, why do you want to learn it, do you pick up techniques quickly, or do you like a slower pace. Always practice, you can never practice too much.
