About Erykah

As artists, we create and bring something completely new into this world. I am a person who can sometimes have trouble expressing my emotions verbally, but through my art I am able to communicate it more effectivley and in a way that allows me to understand myself and my surroundings better. I want to help others be able to express themselves creatively and feel strong in any present moment.

I work in a middle ground between representational and abstraction. My ceramic & sculptural work is more abstract, and my paintings range from representaional to abstraction.

Artist Statement:

I have always found it interesting to observe people and moments that are usually seen as mundane. When I get lost in my mind and end up worrying about things that are out of my control, I look out for certain aspects to help ground me and put me back into the present moment. At home, I am in my safe space and when I focus on how I feel in these moments it allows me to be content and see the beauty of the now, driving me to be excited about life. It reminds me that the future consists of the little moments and urges me to make the most of who I am and how I feel in that specific moment.

In my work, I reveal domestic, intimate private scenes where people are most comfortable to unleash their truest selves. The daily interactions we have with others, with ourselves, and with the objects that surround us have a certain kind of magic. Maybe not the interaction itself, but the automatic connections with those things that cannot really be seen, but only felt. These moments are never truly replaceable as every one is made up of specific little details. This attention to detail and taking notice of these long connections that can be made of fleeting moments are very important to me, and I show that in my art. I work primarily in oil to depict moments in daily life. My work explores sentience, connection, and human interaction with the use of everyday scenes showing the authenticity in each moment.

I am currently in my fourth year at the University of Central Missouri. I will be graduating with a BFA in Studio Art with an emphasis in Painting. Since I have completed this many years at UCM, I am able to substitute teach as well.
