About Sierra

I believe that music is a form of expression, and that has shaped my curriculum over the years. Many traditional piano lessons have the child sit at the piano, staring at a piece of paper until they get so frustrated they give up. I pride myself in providing custom, integrated and diverse lessons for my students to keep music fun, yet instructive.

As for myself, I am a classically trained pianist with 15 years of private, rigorous instruction under my belt. My love for the instrument has taken me as far as Tokyo, Japan to perform in concerts featuring the best pianists my age group has to offer. There, I studied with the original Suzuki instructors and have developed skills along the way that I absolutely love to pass on to my students.

I have been teaching private piano lessons for 6 years to children ages 4-17, and am proud to say that I offer a customized curriculum for each of my students. I focus not only on music theory and ear training, but also life-long skills such as time management, problem solving, and memorization tactics that will help your children be better students in whatever learning situations they find themselves in.

When you sign up for lessons with me, your child not only gains a teacher, but also a mentor and friend. My favorite part of the work I do is getting to know my students and their families so I can best incorporate a love of music into their lives.

I also love the fact that piano lessons don't just teach the student how to play the piano. Studies have shown numerous times that young children who practice piano for just 15 minutes a day have improved math skills, language development and reading comprehension. On top of that, music encourages creativity and will spark that love for creation at a young age.

I have been in rigorous, private lessons since the age of 4 and they have pushed me to become a better version of myself, both personally and musically.

While I did not recieve a degree in the musical arts, I believe that my life experiences with music can teach what no degree can. I lived in Japan during my freshman year of high school, studying and training to play in one of the most prestigious 10 Piano Concerts in the world. I would practice individually for 6 hours a day, then move onto group practices for an additional 2 hours. Private lessons were scattered among the week, and I vividly remember having my English translator yelling Japanese demands in my ears while simultaneously playing a very difficult piece.

This experience taught me so much more than I could have ever learned with a degree in music. I learned discipline, time management, and specific techniques for learning piano that have already proved valuable to my students in the past. While my experience does not include a Bachelor's degree, it is still incredibly valuable and I would love to pass that on to my future students.

I typically use our first lesson to gauge what the student already knows, their attention span, what type of positive reinforcement they respond to, and so on. From there, I am able to determine how to structure their personalized curriculum.

After a few lessons, I can determine what level of repertoire they are prepared for and we can begin diving into a set of books, or an individual piece.

I always challenge my new students to record their practicing time, to keep themselves accountable. If they practice a certain amount each month, a reward is earned.
