About Liza Marie

Hello, and Welcome!

I am a professional vocalist and pianist from New York City, currently living in Nashville. I have a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance, with an additional secondary degree in Piano Performance, from The Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory of Music, and a Master of Arts degree from New York University in Music Education. I am a certified instructor by the New York State Board of Education.

I specialize in vocal instruction for all ages, and piano instruction for beginner to intermediate level students. My training and experience with younger children in beginner piano instruction ensures a strong start to their music education.

I also have over ten years of professional performing experience, both nationally and internationally. I currently sing with the Nashville Symphony Chorus and am a company member of the Nashville Opera.

Due the the current pandemic, I am only available to teach lessons remotely.

Music found me. It's something that has always been part of me, something I've known I would do since I was a small child. It is a universal language and I want to share it. I love performing, but most importantly, I love sharing my joy, passion, and knowledge with aspiring students, helping them unlock their potential and sheer happiness can bring to all.

As stated previously, I have a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance and a minor in piano performance from the Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory of Music, where I studied performance, art song and opera literature, music history, musical theater, opera, language and diction, form and analysis, 18th century counterpoint, and anatomy to better understand the vocal chords as a muscle. I graduated with a Master of Arts degree in Music Education from New York University, continuing my study in choral and orchestral conducting, practicums in percussion, brass, woodwind and string instruments, compositional process in symphonic work, music therapy, and 20th century opera studies. I have also partial first-year course work completed towards a Ph.D. degree in Historical Musicology. I am certified by New York State to teach music K-12, with reciprocity in almost every state in the continental U.S.

Growing up, I studied voice, piano, violin, dance and acrobats, acting, and French Horn. I have been performing professionally since I was 14 years old. I was a member of the East End Kids, who had the pleasure of performing at the opening of Disneyland Paris in 1993. I've performed in chorales, musicals and operas both nationally and internationally for over 10 years while living in New York City. In 2005 at the Downtown Cabaret Theater, I portrayed the role of "Jeanie" in a production of HAIR, which won two Connecticut Circle Critic's Awards. I am currently a member of the Nashville Opera and the Nashville Symphony Chorus.

In June of 2019, The Nashville Symphony & Chorus and the Nashville Ballet collaborated on a production of Carmina Burana, with bold new visions of performance and original choreography, which I was humbled to perform in.

In October of 2019, I made my Nashville Opera debut in "Madame Butterfly."

And in January 2020, I had the pleasure of singing backup vocals for the band FOREIGNER and was a featured soloist with the Nashville Symphony in "The Times They Are A Changin'," an orchestral tribute to the music and poetry of Bob Dylan.

I teach students of all ages and all varying levels of skill. I have taught as young as 3 years old to adults. For my Music for Little Mozarts curriculum, I recommend children ages 3.5-5, or for Beginner Piano, age 5 and up.

For vocal students, I recommend a consultation with me to discuss student's age, training or experience with singing, expectations, and then what I think the best course of instruction would be. Voices are delicate and constantly changing and growing. I want to make sure I understand each individual instrument to ensure the best and healthiest course of instruction.

Have an open dialogue with your potential new instructor. You (and your teacher) want to make sure this will be the best match and that expectations are being met on both sides.

As an artist, I am always creating. I compose my own music, both popular and musical theater, and am currently developing a musical based on a graphic novel. My most recent completed project was my 2nd Zoom Studio Recital, which was held in December 2020. Due to the pandemic, my in person studio recital for my current students was cancelled. My students have worked so incredibly hard, I wanted them to share their talents. I organized an online recital to do just that, and emailed all parents participation awards to present to my students post performance. The joy of the Zoom recital is that anyone from anywhere could attend, and they did. I am also a recent member of the International Songwriting Collective.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Have you had previous musical instruction or is this your first lesson? If so, what was it that inspired you to seek lessons? What are your goals or expectations? Are you wanting long term lessons, or do you need a coaching for a specific audition/performance? What is your availability? Are you comfortable with remote lessons or are you looking for in-person instruction?

Details

My pricing is based off of the personalized and detailed attention I give to each student and his/her specific needs, during and outside of a lesson. My pricing is also based off of my education level and specific degrees obtained: a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance and a minor in piano performance from the Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory of Music, and a Master of Arts degree in Music Education from New York University.

In terms of lessons, a vocal lesson will have customized warm ups focusing on current repertoire needs, music fundamentals and foundations, aural and theory skills, and myself as a trained accompanist. Due to current remote teaching, I am recording all accompaniments and personally emailing those recordings to each student for home practice and performance.

A piano lesson would have similar customized warm ups including scales and finger exercises, training in music fundamentals and foundations, aural and theory skills, and personal attention to proper form. Due to current remote teaching, I record myself playing repertoire as a teaching aide for students and their parents.

I charge $40 for a 30-minute lesson, $60 for a 45-minute lesson, and $80 for a 60-minute lesson.
