About Kathryn

I have experience both in teaching-related fields and video gaming, as well as experience teaching computer science. I understand and deeply believe in the educational value of video games, and I am uniquely qualified to help a student explore and learn through gaming!

One of the moments I live for is the moment a child understands something new for the first time. They get this look in their eyes and I love to see the curiosity awaken there. I also love watching a student transform over time, as they gain self-efficacy and learn to believe in themselves.

I did my first teaching tasks around 7 years ago, where I helped teach Sunday school lessons at my church to groups of 2-6 students. I also did day camps where I was in charge of a similarly-sized groups for a few hours per day. My first paid teaching job was at TechKnowHow, where I did real teaching and classroom management.

In the summer, I am a day camp counselor at TechKnowHow Camps. I have done three summers with TechKnowHow. They provide me with curriculum and materials, and I am in charge of interacting with parents, managing the classroom, implementing and often modifying the curriculum, and making sure all 20 campers have something to present by the end of the day. At TechKnowHow, most of the material I teach campers -- mainly ages 6-8 -- is how to build and program LEGO robots.

I get to know the student, their needs, and their interests. I also gauge their abilities in relevant skills such as spelling, typing, critical thinking, mathematics, computer skills, and programming concepts. Then I form a plan for what we will do going forward.

I have worked with exceptional students of many kinds, including gifted students and students with autism spectrum disorder.

Experience with teaching is exponentially more important than experience with the subject. I've met many teachers who have stellar skills, but don't have good teaching methods, and thus are not so good at their jobs. On the flipside, I've had some teachers that do more teaching than anything else, but know enough about the subject to teach it effectively.
