About Amy
I have worked for the WCSD as a Paraprofessional or Teacher Assistant in Reading and Math Intervention. I started with the school district in 2015 as a daily parent volunteer in 6th grade. I was then hired to teach interventions for Kindergarten - 3rd grade. While working for the district I completed a 9 month course in Northern Nevada English Learning Initiative (NNELI), through UNR. NNELI taught me how to teach students whom use English as a second language After a brief Teachers Aide job at a local high school, I decided to leave WCSD and work from home.
I am patient with my students and believe that every child learns differently. My method is to figure out what learning path works best for each child and teach to their ability. I use a lot of games and rewards. I use online resources (I will have laptop for them to use with me) and paper packets along with hands on games to teach with.
I am a strong advocate for teaching our future generations. I enjoy watching students achieve personal and intellectual growth. There is a truth behind the saying, "....when a kid gets it, it just clicks" and there is nothing more rewarding than seeing that a method you used helped a student click (the pieces together).
I actually have been a parent volunteer for many years. I started when my youngest son was in Kindergarten. He has special needs so I felt that if I wasn't there to give him that extra support in his classroom that he may not get the full benefits of school. I did however work with all of his classmates, not just him. I loved it so much that I continued on through his school years. During his 6th grade year I was working in his classroom with small groups in all subjects and I was approached by the school principal about working full time at the school. I took the necessary steps and began my position there that Spring.
I was recently a hired Paraprofessional for the WCSD. That means that I had to pass the Praxis Exam because I do not hold a degree in Education. I passed the Praxis with a 94%.
As an Interventions Teacher in Elementary I was responsible for student assessment and then placement into one of my groups with similar level students. I was responsible for charting their progress. I also worked with their individual teachers on their current work as to not add anything extra to their already full plates.
During my time with WCSD I completed a course given by UNR that taught me how to work with students that do not have English as their primary language. I learned how to engage and support students with an array of different learning abilities.

When meeting a new student, we will talk about what the student is needing help with and why. I like to know from the student what it is that they are having trouble with, wether it is not understanding a topic or not understanding how it's being taught or even if the topic bores them and they have no interest to learn it. Then we will set up a lesson plan trying different methods that suit them. Sometimes the first method I try works and it just clicks, sometimes I need to get creative. I like to meet for 1hr 1:1 and I like to work with their current teachers if tutoring takes place during school time. I may have you set up permission for me to have email correspondence with their current teacher regarding lessons and homework being taught. Overall I am a resource for your students and their teacher.
I have worked with an array of students with different strengths and weakness. I can develop strategies for students who don't understand the language, students who have attention problems, or students who are defiant and bored. My method in letting the student show me has always been golden in helping them learn.
Dear Student,
You are unique and I get it that you don't understand how something is being taught. I don't believe that every student has to learn something a certain way. If you need help with figuring out how your brain wants to learn, just ask me. Together we will figure it out and get you moving right along.
Kind regards,
Mrs. Howell
When I first work with students, they usually show a low test score in a subject. They usually are confused about something and have just given up trying to learn. My heart skips a beat when I get to see that moment when what I did helps them click the pieces together. I love seeing their progress or hearing about it from their teachers.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Do I understand what the teacher is saying?
Can I follow the instructions, are they clear?
Do I give up because I cannot find the right answer?
Am I willing to try different things in order to understand better?

I don't believe that you have to be rich to get extra help. As a stay at home parent who has always been involved with my children in their classrooms, I know how important it is to get extra support when you are having trouble. Because of this I will work with each individual family on pricing and budget.
When we first meet, we will sit down as a family and discuss how that works for you. I do like to be paid at time of tutoring. I will have a printed agreement/contract for each of us to sign guaranteeing what we discussed as to your household ability to pay.
