About Myriah

I'm willing to start with any level student on any project. If you are super enthusiastic about working on a big project right out of the gate, I'm excited to get you going on it. Likewise if you're really just looking to get your feet wet I've got plenty of beginner projects that I can pick out for you. I'm also willing to teach small groups of 4 to 6 people max.

I love being creative! I love teaching people to explore their own creativity! The best moment for me is when one of my students has an "aha moment." Seeing their eyes light up when they "get it" is the best feeling ever!

My mother always knew that I would be a teacher, because as a kid I was always trying to teach my friends how to knit and crochet. Most of them were not super interested, but she said I had endless patience when trying to teach them. I was always the friend that people would come to when they had some sort of crafty project on their mind. Throughout my life I have been incredibly fortunate to have amazing art teachers, who have encouraged me to share that love with others. I have been so fortunate to be able to share this love through working at Santa Rosa Junior College in their theater arts department and kids summer sewing camps at Hello Stitch in Berkeley. But now on to my Virginia adventure!

In college I majored in theater arts with an emphasis on costume construction and graduated with my AA from Santa Rosa Junior College, and my BA from San Francisco State University. I have also taken many private courses specializing in quilting and sewing. Through my career I've worked at many different theater companies, as well as a vegan leather handbag company, an antique rug restoration company, and have taken classes in many different art forms including pine needle baskets and washi eggs. My most recent position was working at Santa Rosa Junior College in the theater arts department as costume shop manager and adjunct faculty, teaching costuming classes and building costumes. I also worked during the summer months teaching children's summer sewing camps at a San Francisco sewing shop, Hello Stitch.

About the lesson

I love when a student has an idea of what they'd like to make, because I don't want to bore them with a project they don't care about. If you don't care what project you want to start with, I'll probably ask you to pick clothing, quilting, or bags, and we'll go from there. If you are beginning student our first day will consist of talking about this, maybe picking projects, fabrics, and going over machine basics. We will continue from that point at your pace.

I have been fortunate to be able to work with a wide variety of people. From 8 to 14-year-olds at a summer camp, high school students taking junior college classes, and college students up to seniors coming to their community college to further their education. Through working at a diverse community college I've also been able to worked with ADA students with physical impairments, and learning disabilities.

Look for someone you communicate well with, and whose energy fits yours.
