About Katarina

I've been reading music since before I could read books, and my passion has only increased with age. In addition to many years of private voice training and choral work, I have a BFA in acting from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. For me, conveying meaning and emotion is a vital component of singing, no matter the genre, and I always seek to blend that into vocal technique. In school, I was frequently a student music mentor, and since finishing my degree I have taught at the Music Playhouse of Chicago as well as at Beyond the Stars in Willowbrook.

Music is a whole body experience. Even the silliest, simplest songs are important. Getting to watch students blossom in this venue is so rewarding because the acchievement reflects in their whole person. Whether it's something they do for fun or something they want to pursue, everyone can benefit from a music education.

I was incredibly lucky to recieve a stellar arts education in my public school system growing up, and from that time I knew that I wanted to pay that experience forward. As soon as I found opportunities to do so, I jumped.

I have been in formal music lessons in at least one form since I was 3 years old, and have a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Acting from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. I also recieved training through my employment at the Music Playhouse of Chicago.

About the lesson

The first thing I do is ask them about their musical preferences. If they have any experience, I ask them to show me their favorite piece that they have worked on. We talk about goals, preferences, and the ways that they learn best. For younger students, caregivers are involved if necessary. We spend a little time finding our groove, and create a plan that works best for the individual.

By nature of my work with the Music Playhouse, the majority of my experience is with younger children (ages 0-6). But I also have experience coaching voice and acting with tweens and with my colleagues in the acting program during college.

Shop around! Someone might have the best resume in the world and still not be the right fit for you. There's nothing wrong with taking introductory lessons with multiple teachers until you find the person you work best with.

Whenever one of my little kids sings a solo in class for the first time, it reminds me why I got started, and I carry it with me for weeks.
