About Jaylyn

I love working with students who have interests in multiple genres of music! I myself like to do crossover work and I feel that having great training in multiple genres can prove to be beneficial. I have been in musicals and operas and both have helped each other at different times!

I love being able to let my students have the space to explore and see what works for them. The whole point of being a teacher is to provide information and tools so that one day the student can go out into the world and do things with limited assistance. My time at Juilliard has provided me with tools I can use for the professional world, and to share that wih another person is really great!

I got started teaching at a pretty young age. When I was 13 I started with choral directing at a musical theater non profit and it all went up from there!

I am about to graduate from The Juilliard School with a BM in Vocal Performance and I will be starting my Masters Degree at Rice University Shepard School of Music in the coming fall of 2020. I also have training in flute performance and was competitive in that area for about 6 years before I dedicated myself to singing. I am also an ear training coach so if you have any need for that, I am able to help there as well.

About the lesson

I love to first get to know my students and ask them what their passions are, even if it isn't music. I then like to vocalize to see where our limit in terms of range is. Then I like to work on some technical exercises. Then I suggest rep and singers for them to listen to for the next time we meet. I like to give my new students about a week or two to familiarize themselves with a piece before we can dive into it together. Overall, I want my students to be hardworking and open to new ideas.

Always make sure the teacher has your best interest at heart. There are some people who want to make singers into someone they would listen to instead of putting the singer in things that best showcase their raw talent. Don't let them push you in a box. Also dont be afraid to ask questions

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about what is most important to you. That way, when you get started with your teacher, they also know what to expect. The worst thing is when the teacher and student aren't on the same page, and things could have been solved if there was just communication. We won't get mad!
