About Thomas

Thomas Rene is an experienced teacher of voice (both singing and speaking), speech, accents/dialects, and acting in general. He currently is the Head of Voice and Speech at the New York City campus of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, where he teaches the aformentioned subjects. Before his current position he has taught both locally and internationally at schools including the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London and Pace University. He received a BS in Communications Sciences and Disorders with a minor in music from Worcester State University. He continued his studies at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London, where he received an MA in Voice Studies. He is a certified Knight-Thompson Speechwork teacher and has expereince in many voice and singing modalities of the major voice pedogogy canon.

Exploring voice, speech, and acting helps us discover more about ourselves. It connects us to the need to express and create. More importantly, by studying human behaviour we can become more patient, caring, and empathetic people.

MA in Voice Studies from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London

About the lesson

What I would advise students to look for is a teacher who has no issue with lessons being recorded. That should be a complimentary and readily accessible resource for someone who is investing a lot of time and money in this work. Success comes with hours of practice away from the teacher and any tools that can help us do so is a plus, if not a right.

The other bit of advise I would give is to be weary of teachers who pretend to know everything. Any area of study should have room to grow and develop and if your teacher is flaunting their knowledge or evading your questions then run. A great teacher finds a balance of deep knowledge, with moments of admitted ignorance that is then followed up with further research. Make sure the teacher can back up their knowledge with evidence based research and/or practical experience.
