About Steve
I am a friendly, experienced journalism lecturer based in London, used to helping students turn rough ideas into clear, confident stories, essays and dissertations. I love teaching because I enjoy watching students “click” with a concept and suddenly see how to improve their work. I’m especially interested in helping people find their own voice as writers while still meeting exam and university expectations in news writing, media law and digital journalism.

I help you turn “almost there” ideas into confident, publishable journalism. Whether you are tackling A‑Level media exams, a first‑year reporting module or a final‑year dissertation, I can help sharpen your writing, strengthen your arguments and build the real‑world skills editors (and examiners) are looking for.
The technique:
I start from your goals and current work. We look at your essays, articles or project briefs together, then agree clear, achievable targets for each session (for example, “stronger intros” or “better case law examples in media law”).
I break “big and scary” tasks into simple steps. For essays and dissertations, we map out structure, research strategy and argument flow, then turn that into a realistic timetable you can actually follow.
I model newsroom and academic standards. You will learn how to fact‑check, reference properly, avoid plagiarism, and apply media law and ethics to real‑world stories, so your work is safe, accurate and convincing.
What my lessons are like:
A typical lesson is 60 minutes, focused and practical, with short activities rather than long lectures.
What I teach
- News writing and feature writing: angles, structure, leads, quotes, balance, and clear, engaging prose for print and digital platforms.
- Media law and ethics: defamation, contempt, privacy, reporting restrictions and ethical decision‑making for student journalists and media students (UK‑focused).
- Digital journalism: live blogging, basic SEO thinking, headline writing, multimedia storytelling and how to think about audiences online.
- Essays, dissertations and final projects: from refining your question and literature review to structuring chapters, polishing arguments and strengthening conclusions.
My qualifications and experience
I am an experienced university lecturer in journalism in London, teaching news writing, digital journalism and media law to undergraduate and postgraduate students. I have many years’ experience supporting students with essays, dissertations and final media projects, including supervision and one‑to‑one academic support.
My professional background is in journalism and journalism education,
My lessons are friendly, structured, practical and very down‑to‑earth.
