About Kris

As a part-time professor at Fanshawe College (London, ON), I have been teaching chemistry, anatomy, biology, and math in the Pre-Health Sciences program since January 2014. I possess an Honours Bachelor of Science with specialization in Microbiology and Immunology (2011), and a Master of Science in Microbiology and Immunology (2013), both from the University of Western Ontario. During my undergraduate degree, I was enrolled in many courses in Biology/Microbiology, Immunology, Chemistry, Genetics, Biochemistry, and Math. I graduated with a cumulative 4-year average of 88.3%. Concurrent with teaching, I work as the lead scientist for an oral probiotic product development company focused on oral disease prevention (cavities, gingivitis, etc). There, I plan in vitro experiments and clinical studies to design, evaluate, and improve products for healthcare.

About the lesson

At Fanshawe College, my standard teaching methodology is through small- and large-group PowerPoint lectures (avg. class size of 50) with in-class polling technologies, tutorials, and 1-on-1 meetings. Pre-Health Sciences is an entry-level science program, so students start with a wide range of scientific proficiencies, and it is my job to make science approachable and easy-to-learn for newcomers, yet stimulating and challenging enough for the advanced learner.

My methodology is simple, and according to student feedback surveys, it is quite effective! I teach by first taking a concept and breaking it down to its most basic roots. Have we seen this word or something similar before in science? Can we predict what this concept might be about based on our previous knowledge? I then teach the full concept, explaining it from a variety of different angles, and asking plenty of thought-provoking questions along the way.

The human brain is wired to seek out and learn patterns. Sciences can be tricky to learn, but I am a firm believer that the hardest part is the beginning. As you learn concepts from various fields of science, your brain starts to make connections between subjects, bringing new light to previous content. For instance: chemically, the blood is buffered by the bicarbonate system, however the kidneys and lungs control it from a physiological standpoint. How do things like hyperventilation, or excess ion consumption of diuretics, affect this system? Understanding the interplay of both scientific fields in this system leads to a more sound understanding of the overall concept. This is how I teach, by constantly helping students arrive at new connections.

At SuperPROF, my goal is to take my experience from classroom teaching, and apply it to 1-on-1 or small group tutor/help sessions. Lessons will be deliver in person, or via video conference. I have had many students approach me saying "I was terrible at chemistry in high school, but now I am getting 90s in your class!". If you put in the time to work with me, I will improve your understanding, and your grades.

Kris loves to teach, which is evident everytime he stands in front of a class. This passion not only makes him a great teacher, but also makes him very approachable. Students know that there is nothing he would like to do more than to help them figure out something they are struggling with.
