About Jules

I am an artist, researcher and textile designer whose practice integrates teaching and learning in its foundations. I have worked for numerous small brands in London and am the head of textiles for New Gen backed brand E.w.usie while working on my own artistic practice and teaching at my alma mater, Central Saint Martins for their short course programs and guest lectured for the MA and BA programs after finishing my BA in Fashion Design with Marketing and my MA in Fashion for Textiles. Whilst studying and after, I have worked freelance for private clients and companies such as Mcqueen, Noel Stewart Millinery and Knitster LDN. I’ve also exhibited my work internationally including Dutch Design Week and my work has been featured in I-D, Dazed, POP Mag, Vogue Runway, More or Less Mag, Arena Homme + and more. I’ve been working in fashion whilst studying for nearly a decade and have been making work for more years than that. Critical making through design is something I translate in my own basic principles of being and in my professional capacity and my goal is to help students understand this basic principle of thinking-by-making and to help students out of their creative slumps.

About the lesson

My main goal is to help students build a portfolio that's applicable for industry and higher education while remaining true to their interests. I’ve helped multiple students get into their desired foundation course to an MA course at Central Saint Martins and other UK arts universities. Whilst teaching at Central Saint Martins, I’ve worked in group tutorial to one one-on-one portfolio building projects within the universities framework while simultaneously helping students outside the university setting to get onto their desired course. In addition to helping students go into further education, I aim to help students develop their own unique taste and skill set that works for themselves, furthering their own unique practice and ways of making. To do so, I incorporate more hands-on making skills. These take place in a step-by-step tutorial format for skills such as sewing, pattern cutting and tracing, screen printing, hand sewing, hand embroidery, beading, crochet, collage and paper arts, life drawing for fashion and figure, design from concept drawing, color theory, painting, conceptual textile making, and basic to advance clothing mending and alterations. My studio is based in South London and screen printing is limited to my studio, however design and hand skill lessons can take place in your own setting and preferred materials.

Details

The first half of an hour lesson is free under the contingency of an hour and a half booked in advance. The first half hour is used to understand the needs of each students assignment or what exactly they want to learn.
