About David

I've been playing guitar for over 20 years and teaching for more than a decade, both privately and within Further Education. Music has been a huge part of my life throughout that time, and I'm still an active musician today, performing live every week alongside other musicians playing at a professional standard.

My background extends beyond playing guitar. I hold qualifications in Sound and Music Technology, covering areas including live sound engineering, recording and mixing. This has given me a broader understanding of sound, equipment and the practical side of making and performing music, which I can also draw upon where it's useful to a student's development.

I've spent the last 5 years working in Further Education, supporting students with their practical musical development. I've also previously worked with secondary-school students privately, including helping GCSE Music students develop the practical performance skills needed for their assessments.

Through my current work with students aged 16+, I undergo a DBS check each year, so I maintain an up-to-date DBS alongside my teaching experience.

From both my personal and teaching experience, I know the frustrations of watching endless YouTube videos to try and learn the next technique, riff, theory concept or way to stop the string buzzing on that one fret, and ending up more confused than when you started with countless pieces of conflicting information. We'll get to the point, focus on what actually works and make sure you understand why it works, so you don't waste time learning something you'll only have to unlearn later.

I'm particularly interested in helping guitarists get beyond the point of simply being able to play simple chords and instead develop a broader understanding of music and their instrument. For me, becoming a good guitarist isn't about mastering one impressive technique, it's about developing the combination of technique, musical understanding, listening skills, confidence and practical experience that allows you to adapt to different musical situations.

Ultimately, my aim is to pass on the knowledge I've built over more than two decades of playing and help other guitarists become more confident, capable and well-rounded musicians.

About the lesson

My lessons are designed for guitarists who already know the basics but feel they've hit a wall, have gaps in their playing, or simply want to become more complete, well-rounded musicians.

Rather than following a rigid, one-size-fits-all syllabus, we'll build lessons around what you want to achieve, while using a structured approach to make sure you're continually progressing. Over the last decade of teaching, and from the feedback I've received from past students, I've found that people learn best when they're working towards things they genuinely want to achieve, rather than endlessly repeating exercises for the sake of them. The goal is to give you useful skills, understand how and when to apply them, and then actually use them musically.

Depending on your goals, we can work on techniques including alternate and economy picking, legato, tapping, fingerstyle, hybrid and sweep picking, harmonics and more. But technique is only one part of becoming a good guitarist.

We'll also develop practical musicianship: improving your ear, quickly identifying keys, understanding chord inversions, improvising confidently, knowing where your "safe" notes are and how to venture outside them, and learning theory through practical application rather than simply memorising scales.

I can also help you understand the instrument itself. This can include correctly restringing and cleaning your guitar, understanding neck relief, action and intonation, identifying common setup problems and learning which simple issues you can safely deal with yourself — and when it's time to take the guitar to a professional.

For students interested in playing with others, we can work on jamming, listening and reacting to other musicians, dynamics, musical cues and live-performance skills. I can also help you develop the coordination required to sing while playing guitar, particularly for backing vocals or taking your first steps towards singing and playing complete songs.

Most students start with 30-minute lessons. I find this is usually the sweet spot for focused, productive tuition. 45-minute lessons are available when the additional time is useful and can give us more opportunity to apply what we've covered through improvisation, playing together or a short jam.

You'll leave each lesson with a clear idea of what to work on and why, so the work you do between lessons directly contributes to your progress.

Lessons are offered at the following times and rates:
30 minutes - £20
45 minutes - £30

In my experience, 1 hour lessons are unnecessary. 30 minutes per lessons is more than enough for most student requirements, however 45 minute lessons are available where it's right for the student to have additional lesson time.
