About Hamish

First and foremost, I am a writer. I recently moved to London with the goal of completing and publishing a novel I've been working on for half a decade. I am currently in the pitching phase of this journey and have received encouraging feedback on my work. Beyond my University Education, I have read every book I could get my hands on relating to the fiction craft. My notable favourites are "A Swim in the Pond on a Rainy Day" by George Saunders and "Consider His" by Chuck Palahniuk. I also write weekly for a Substack page which alternates between fiction and non-fiction posts. I am constantly working on my own craft as a writer and have learnt plenty of personal lessons through trial and error that I'm happy to pass onto all of my students to spare them these roadblocks.

About the lesson

Ranging from simple starter exercises to in-depth theory, I offer hour-long lessons in all things fiction. I typically begin my lessons with a writing prompt in order to get a gauge of a student's writing ability. From there I read the piece and conduct a short interview to gain an understanding of the student's thought process and the direction that most interests them. I will then provide feedback on their piece of writing and offer exercises according to areas where I see need for improvement. Following this "baseline" lesson, I tailor a custom-made plan for each student (which I'm happy to work through with the parent) making sure to incorporate both technical goals and the areas of interest expressed by the student during that initial discussion about their work. Although I don't work to a uniform plan, this plan will typically include writing exercises, short reading extracts and lots of feedback. I believe that fiction has the ability to open up whole new worlds to people, but can be intimidating if a requisite balance of playfulness is not included to balance out the technique. Experience-wise, I have taught the 9-12 age group as a volunteer at the Literacy Pirates in Hackney. However, I am part of a regular writers' group for adults and have worked as a professional critique partner online. I am comfortable teaching fiction up to university level.
