About Agil

I am Agil Pirverdiyev, a FIDE Master and FIDE-certified coach from Baku, Azerbaijan, with 15 years of teaching experience and more than 100 students. I teach chess online to students around the world, and a number of them are in Canada. My FIDE rating is 2508 rapid and 2411 classical. In 2011 I won the Under 16 World Championship, I was Under 14 European Champion, and I have a team silver medal from the Chess Olympiad.

The players I help most are adults between roughly 1000 and 1900 whose rating stopped moving years ago, and juniors already competing in tournaments. In both cases the problem is rarely a missing opening line. It is what happens on move 15, when nothing is forced and there is no obvious plan.

For those positions I teach a fixed set of four questions. What is my worst piece? What does the pawn structure tell me? What does my opponent want? Which exchange can I force?

They are simple, they are repeatable under time pressure, and they produce candidate moves instead of a feeling. Alongside them we study eight pawn structures where the answers are already known: the isolated queen's pawn, hanging pawns, the Carlsbad structure with the minority attack, the open file and seventh rank, opposite-side castling, a closed centre with a backward pawn, good knight against bad bishop, and space advantage with the exchange rule. Recognising the structure tells you which side of the board you belong on and which pieces you want traded.

Everything is anchored to your own games. I look at your recent play, identify the mistake that keeps returning, and set homework aimed at that mistake specifically.

About the lesson

Private online lessons on a shared board. Send five to ten recent games beforehand, wins and losses both, and I will have read them before we meet. That way the first session is about your play rather than about introductions.

The lesson works through positions from your own games. You answer the four questions aloud, I show you where the reasoning breaks, and we place the position inside one of the eight structures so it becomes a pattern rather than a one-off. Homework is short, specific and checked at the start of the next lesson.

Between lessons you can send me games and I will comment on them.

Sessions suit adult improvers who have plateaued and juniors preparing for rated tournaments. Complete beginners are welcome too, and learning a correct method from the start saves years later.

I am used to scheduling across time zones, so Canadian evenings and weekends both work.

Packages: 5 lessons, or 10 lessons with one lesson free - you pay for nine, we play ten. The first lesson is free, so you can see how I work before committing to anything.

I developed an interest in chess when I was a child. A family member taught me the basics, and I was immediately fascinated by the blend of strategy and creativity required to play. Over time, chess became more than just a game-it was a way to challenge myself intellectually, improve my focus, and learn patience. The beauty of chess is its infinite complexity; there's always something new to discover, which keeps me inspired.

Chess is a universal language that brings people together across cultures, ages, and skill levels. I'm passionate about the game because it's not just about competition-it's about personal growth. Chess teaches critical thinking, problem-solving, and resilience, all of which can be applied to life. Being able to share this with my students and witness their progress is incredibly rewarding.

Tutoring allows me to share my love for chess while helping students achieve their goals, whether it's winning their first game or excelling in tournaments. What makes me a "Superprof" is my ability to adapt my teaching to suit each student's learning style and level. One of my role models in chess is Anatoly Karpov, who exemplifies precision, patience, and strategic brilliance. On a personal level, my first chess coach inspired me to see the game as more than just competition-it's an art form and a discipline. Their calm, encouraging approach to teaching showed me the importance of meeting students where they are and helping them grow at their own pace.

The keys to success in chess, and in life, are preparation, adaptability, and a growth mindset. A growth mindset reminds you that setbacks are opportunities to learn and improve. For my students, I emphasize these principles to help them succeed both in chess and beyond.
