About Agil

I am Agil Pirverdiyev, a FIDE Master and FIDE-certified coach from Baku, Azerbaijan, rated 2508 rapid and 2411 classical. As a junior I became Under 16 World Champion and Under 14 European Champion, and I won a team silver medal at the Chess Olympiad. I also hold a FIDE arbiter title, with open tournament wins in Italy, Switzerland, France and Spain. I have coached for 15 years and taught more than 100 students, nearly all of them online.

Most players who write to me are somewhere between 1000 and 1900 and have sat at the same rating for two or three years. They know openings, they solve tactics daily, and they still lose the same way every week. That is usually not a knowledge problem. It is a decision problem: in quiet positions where nothing is forced, there is no reliable way to choose a move.

So I teach one. In any position where the plan is not obvious, I ask four questions. What is my worst piece? What does the pawn structure tell me? What does my opponent want? Which exchange can I force?

Those four questions turn a vague position into a short list of candidate moves. From there we work through eight recurring pawn structures that cover most of what you will meet over the board: the isolated queen's pawn, hanging pawns, the Carlsbad structure and the minority attack, the open file and the seventh rank, opposite-side castling, the closed centre with a backward pawn, good knight against bad bishop, and space advantage with the exchange rule. In each of them the four questions already have known answers, so you stop calculating every middlegame from scratch.

The teaching starts with your games, not mine. I go through your recent losses and draws, find the mistake you keep repeating, and say plainly what it is.

I also coach juniors preparing for tournaments.

Lessons are one to one, online, on a shared board with your own games open next to it. Before we start I ask for five to ten recent games, so the first session is already about your play rather than general theory.

A typical lesson: we look at one of your games, stop at the moments where you had no plan, and run the four questions. Then we connect that position to whichever of the eight structures it belongs to, so next time you recognise it instead of working it out again. You finish with written homework, usually three or four specific positions or studies, and we check it at the start of the next lesson.

Between lessons you are welcome to send me games and I will comment on them.

Suitable for adult improvers from roughly 1000 to 1900, and for juniors playing rated tournaments. Complete beginners are welcome as well, and learning a proper method from the start saves a great deal of time later.

Times are flexible across UK and European time zones.

The first lesson is free and lasts 30 minutes - send me your games beforehand and I will tell you what I would work on before you commit to anything.

Packages: 5 lessons, or 10 lessons with one free - you pay for nine and we play ten.
