About Avery
Flamenco entered my life through a family trip abroad, where the intensity of live guitar playing left an impression I never quite shook off afterward. Grunge came later, during a rebellious phase that pulled me toward heavier, messier sounds entirely different from flamenco's precision. Balancing both styles over the years taught me that discipline and rawness aren't actually opposites in music. That balance still defines how I approach teaching advanced students today.
Working with experienced players means less hand-holding and more honest, direct feedback, which I've learned to give carefully. Advanced students often already sense their weak points, so my job becomes helping them fix those weaknesses efficiently. I particularly enjoy watching a working musician refine a messy technique into something clean and stage-ready. That kind of practical improvement feels more meaningful to me than teaching flashy tricks alone.
I still perform occasionally myself, splitting time between flamenco-influenced sets and heavier grunge-inspired projects. Staying active as a performer keeps my teaching grounded in real, current stage experience rather than outdated theory. Lessons often adapt closely to whatever genre a student is actively working on or performing live. My hope is always that students leave not just skilled, but genuinely ready for real musical situations.

Students who reach an advanced stage usually don't need basic chord explanations, so my lessons start further along, focusing instead on tone and technique refinement. Flamenco picking patterns are introduced with attention to precise finger independence, since sloppy execution ruins the style's sharp, percussive character. Grunge's raw, distorted power chords follow, teaching students how to control feedback and dynamics rather than just playing loud. Both styles demand a different kind of control, and switching between them keeps advanced players sharp.
Rhythmic complexity becomes a bigger focus at this stage, particularly flamenco's shifting time signatures and syncopated accents. I pair this with grunge's looser, feel driven strumming, helping students understand how precision and rawness can coexist in the same player. Improvisation exercises are introduced more seriously here, pushing students to build their own phrases rather than only replicate existing riffs. Recording sessions become a regular part of practice, revealing subtle timing or tone issues that are easy to miss live.
Working musicians in particular need practical, stage ready skills, not just technical exercises. I focus heavily on performance stamina, quick style switching and handling equipment issues mid set. Repertoire stays flexible, built around whatever genre a student is currently performing or writing in. My goal throughout remains sharpening real, usable skill rather than chasing flashy but impractical techniques.
