About James

I am a university student at Sussex, rated 1800, who represents the chess club at their strongest team. Improving is something I always strive for in myself and I have valuable experience in breaking barriers for development at every stage in a chess player's career. Whilst not a grandmaster, something I believe that is lacking in other teachers' toolbox is willingness to work WITH my students rather than simply instruct them. As a coach, I value good communication and understanding as well as the capacity to share knowledge and perceptions to strive closer to the shared goal of improvement for the student.

About the lesson

Considerable experience in tutoring with a flexible perception on learning. Lessons are typically 1 hour but can be changed on request. I like to focus on what my client believes is necessary for their improvement and offer my outlook and services. My level of teaching is anywhere between beginner and advanced, with different styles tailored to the student's ability and own style. I use computer analysis to enhance opening, middlegame and endgame technique but also encourage human-based analysis to develop instincts and understanding.

Perfect! James is a patient, methodical and supportive teacher. Just because you are good at chess doesn't mean you are a good teacher of chess. It's obvious with James however that his goal is to help you learn and finding out what your particular needs are is part of the process. I like that he seems to get pleasure from my occasional breakthroughs just as much as I do. Highly recommended.

Perfect! James is a patient, methodical and supportive teacher. Just because you are good at chess doesn't mean you are a good teacher of chess. It's obvious with James however that his goal is to help you learn and finding out what your particular needs are is part of the process. I like that he seems to get pleasure from my occasional breakthroughs just as much as I do. Highly recommended.
