About Catherine

I am a UK qualified teacher and have taught privately for nearly 30 years. I am also an examiner for French GCSE and A Level since 1998.
I am very experienced in teaching DELF to any level, and preparing you towards the B2 exam now required to obtain French citizenship.
I am a French native and have lived most of my adult life in the UK. I have always had a love for languages and studied English Literature and Art, with 'French as a foreign language', at the University of Nancy (Lorraine region of France). I met my British husband and came to live in Portsmouth where I spent my first year as a French 'assistante', before qualifying with a PGCE in Modern Languages (1995).
I have never stopped teaching since. I now teach privately, mostly online since lockdown, as I believe that learning and speaking a foreign language opens so many doors in one's mind and enriches lives!
My goal is to help students gain proficiency and confidence whilst enjoying what they are doing!

About the lesson

I teach my pupils in a variety of different ways, according to their best personal learning style and ultimate goal. Each learner is different and the beauty of one-to-one tuition is that I can match each learner to the best methodology for him/her. I do have a tendency to want to teach grammar and verbs (which is very French!) but only because these are some of the essential foundations to mastering the language, together with vocabulary and idioms. I will assess my pupil's needs and current skills, we'll decide on a programme of learning, a textbook and exercise book and set goals. The ultimate aim is to give you the confidence and the ability to express your own thoughts into French. We will regularly review your progress. I love to teach by speaking the target language during our lessons but I am always listening to my pupils and we always switch back to English when needed. I do believe that my pupils start to become much more confident with their speaking very quickly.

Perfect! Catherine has been tutoring our son in French for the past four months in preparation for his GCSE, and we’ve been extremely impressed with the progress he’s made in that time.

Her lessons are always well-structured, engaging and tailored to his needs. She has a great way of explaining things so they really make sense, which has helped build both his understanding and his confidence with the language.

Catherine has also been very flexible and accommodating with lesson times, which we’ve really appreciated. Our son feels much more comfortable with speaking and understanding French, and we’ve seen a clear improvement since he started working with her.

We would happily recommend Catherine to any parent looking for a supportive, reliable and excellent French tutor.

I am really enjoying teaching Annabel who is so motivated to improve on her French so she can better understand and converse with French people when she travels over to France. Annabel works very hard in between lessons and likes to ask questions during. Well done Annabel!

Catherine really helped me throughout my A level in French working on both the grammar and the literature and film part of my examination.
