About Matt
I'm a teacher with years of experience at schools and language centres, developing English skills in friendly and relaxed classroom environments. I've been playing chess since I was a kid, with thousands of matches racked up over the last few years in particular.
I also have a background as a games journalist, covering high level esports and other games for prestigious websites. I've seen (and experienced!) what competition looks like when it turns ugly, so I'm keen to play a small role in making chess a better, friendlier place.

I teach complete beginners and up to 1000 elo, as rated on Chess.com or Lichess. We'll figure out the best area for you (or your child) to work on, with our time split between training games, exercises and structured advice on how to improve.
Beyond chess skills, I'm a big believer in the importance of developing a healthy attitude towards competition in general. My lessons take inspiration from The Inner Game Of Tennis, a wonderful book about learning how to get out of your own way.
Ego is the enemy, so we'll try to crush that as thoroughly as your opponent's pieces!
