About David

I'm a professional songwriter with almost 15 years writing experience and a diverse portfolio of credits. I regularly write with artists in the UK, Europe, and US and have recently started taking my first production clients. As a writer, I'm primarily concerned by the lyric, form and structure side of writing but, with guitar as my main instrument, also usually write the majority of the musical elements. I’ve written with some really exciting artists around the UK, US, and EU and have a good track record of getting songs placed in major Spotify playlists and securing heavy radio rotation including multiple plays on BBC Radio 1. My specialities are in folk, alt-pop, and indie-rock, but also have experience in RnB and country. In 2020, I finished a Songwriting Masters' at ICMP in London, for which I received a Distinction, and am currently co-writing with a diverse range of artists for a number of professional projects. In my Major Repertoire Project at the end of the course, I studied the roles played by the co-writer in writing sessions and this gave me a great insight into the collaborative process and equipped me to be a better rounded collaborator.

My lessons are heavily tailored to the needs and interests of my students, whether that be learning to write/edit/improve lyrics and melodies, a crash course in music theory, music production, putting chord progressions together, finishing songs and developing productive routines, or adding some accountability and objective feedback to your process. Working as a professional songwriter and studying MA Songwriting has equipped me with a wealth of tools to sharpen the technical craft of a song and to harness the creative process to bring the best out of other songwriters. In lessons, I draw from this to help new writers develop their own unique voices. I'm a big believer in constantly writing and sharing so I like to set weekly briefs to encourage you to write in new ways and then give detailed and constructive feedback that will help you grow. I know from experience that sharing new songs can be unnerving so I take a lot of care helping people overcome this hurdle. Outside of classes, I'm open to discuss songs, technique, career goals, co-writing, production, learning resources, and other topics that will help you develop as a songwriter.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I played guitar on and off for years as a kid but really got invested when I discovered people like Jackson Browne and Neil Young when I was 16 and started writing my own songs; 60s/70s folk-rock was really my launching pad into writing songs and taking guitar seriously.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I listen to a lot of modern indie-folk/indie-rock currently - I'm really enjoying everything Aaron Dessner puts his name to at the moment but will also find myself returning to favourites from my teens such as Tom Petty.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

Some of the music theory I work through with students can be quite difficult but as soon as students get to grips with the logic of theory, they're off to the races.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

It's probably an esoteric instrument with twenty strings that I've never seen before but I'd have to say singing. So much has to go into the maintenance of your voice beyond the core skillset, I take my hat off to anyone who can sing. That said, any instrument is hard to truly master.
  • What are your keys to success?

Be open and friendly - you have to spend a lot of time with other people in music so you'll get far more opportunities if people enjoy your company.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning.

I don't know if a late-night bar would be my first choice of meeting place for musical heroes but Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne to chat and thank them for their influence and Jack Antonoff to pick his brains on collaboration.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

Not a specific anecdote but one of the most valuable experiences of my music school days was learning the importance of sharing work, listening to feedback, and working with others. There's a lot of ego in corners of the music industry so people will always find it refreshing if you can be open and collaborative without letting pride get in the way.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

Empathy and understanding the pressure of playing guitar to somebody else or sharing original songs to another person for the first time.
