About Riley

Teaching saxophone requires balancing the rigors of technical skill with the freedom of artistic expression. My lessons begin by cultivating a strong technical foundation: efficient breath support, a flexible and stable embouchure, finger dexterity, and accurate rhythmic sense. These skills enable students to develop consistent tone quality and endurance while preventing injury. At the same time, I encourage expressive playing through detailed work on articulation, dynamics, vibrato, and phrasing. I weave music theory and ear training into lessons to help students understand the harmonic and rhythmic structures behind the music they play. Improvisation is a cornerstone of my approach; I break it down into achievable steps, starting with simple scales and motifs, gradually introducing melodic development, rhythmic variation, and harmonic complexity. I tailor repertoire to each student’s tastes and ambitions, including jazz standards, blues tunes, classical études, and contemporary pieces to ensure lessons are both challenging and enjoyable. I also utilize technology—recording devices, play-along tracks, and digital loopers—to supplement practice and foster creativity. One of my most fulfilling teaching moments involved a student who overcame stage fright through gradual exposure to performance and improvisation, eventually taking leadership roles in school ensembles. My goal is to create a learning space where students feel motivated, supported, and free to explore the full expressive potential of their saxophone playing.

I approach saxophone teaching with the philosophy that every student’s musical journey is unique and should be nurtured with patience, creativity, and technical precision. Early lessons focus on tone production, breathing techniques, embouchure development, and finger dexterity to build a strong foundation that supports a lifetime of playing.

I emphasize listening skills and ear training alongside theory, helping students develop an intuitive understanding of scales, modes, and chord changes essential for improvisation and ensemble playing. My lessons balance structured exercises with creative activities such as improvisation games, transcription projects, and exploring different genres—from jazz and blues to funk and classical. Technology is a valuable tool in my teaching, as I incorporate recording sessions, play-along tracks, and slow practice apps to enhance students’ independent practice routines. I prioritize fostering a growth mindset, encouraging students to embrace challenges and learn from mistakes without pressure.

Performance preparation is also key, with coaching on stage presence, managing nerves, and effective rehearsal strategies. I tailor lessons to individual goals, whether students aspire to play professionally, join school bands, or enjoy music as a lifelong hobby. One of the most rewarding experiences was helping a student with limited musical background gain confidence and perform an improvised solo at a community concert. Ultimately, my goal is to help students find joy in music-making while developing the skills and expression needed to share their voice through the saxophone.
