About Jack
As a graduate student completing my Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at Baylor University, I understand firsthand that mastering a new complex skill requires structure, patience, and the right guide. My name is Jack, and my passion for teaching extends far beyond the chessboard.
Before focusing on chess coaching, I spent years refining my instructional skills as an academic tutor for collegiate student-athletes, a university biology learning assistant, and a youth Taekwondo instructor. Hi, I’m Jack! My approach to teaching chess is entirely centered on patience, structured progression, and making the game accessible rather than intimidating.
My Teaching Method & Techniques:
Many chess coaches just play games with their students and point out mistakes as they happen. I believe in structured, incremental learning. I break the complex rules of the game into bite-sized minigames (like "Pawn Wars" or "Knight Pac-Man"). We isolate specific concepts—like safe opening principles or spotting basic tactics—and master them before we ever put all 32 pieces on the board for a full match.
A Typical Lesson Plan (60 Minutes)
Warm-up (10 mins): We review concepts from the previous week to build a strong foundation and ensure the ideas stick.
New Concept (15 mins): I introduce the day's theme, such as a new tactical trick (like a "fork" or "pin") or a specific endgame checkmate pattern.
Practical Application (15 mins): We set up custom board positions so the student can practice the new concept hands-on without the distraction of a full game.
Guided Play (20 mins): We play a casual game where we "think out loud" together. We focus heavily on applying what we just learned, rather than worrying about the final outcome of the game.
