About Emily
General:
Teaching is not just something I do to pay the bills: it is truly a passion of mine. Helping young musicians find what excites them most about music is something that brings me great joy, and I feel privileged to be able to share my love of music with my students.
Experience:
I have extensive experience teaching voice, composition, and music theory in both private and classroom settings. I have taught at after-school programs, tutored classmates, and have taught private students. I have also taught English music theory to ESL students (adult).
Education:
I graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Music in classical voice and composition, as well as from the Manhattan School of Music with a Master's degree in composition, studying with Reiko Füting. You can find my full bio on MSM's website.
Career:
I am a published composer who has been commissioned by numerous ensembles. You can find my music by searching my name on Cypress Choral Music or Silent Dawn Publishing. While choral/vocal music is a focus of mine, I compose music for all instrumentations and would be happy to focus on what interests my student(s)!

I believe in creating well-rounded musicians who have the skills to pursue any musical endeavour, be it performance, composition, conducting... the sky is the limit!
The predominant musical curriculum assumes that every young musician will want to be a performer, and while that is a wonderful and exciting path, it is not the only one.
My approach:
For voice students (beginner-intermediate)
-Sight-reading and aural skills heavily emphasized for a strong foundation
-Age and level-appropriate repertoire selection (with the student's input)
-Building confidence onstage and healthy vocal habits
For theory/composition students (beginner-pre college)
-Versatile curriculum with emphasis on areas of interest for the student, or on material for an upcoming exam.
-Weekly assignments, adapted to the level, age, and capacity of the student given their schedule.
-Emphasis on often-overlooked areas of study: score-reading, conducting, instrumentation/orchestration (for more advanced students), and knowledge of repertoire from all eras, including contemporary/living composers.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Emily taught our daughter music (voice and theory) for one year - and would still be had she not moved away for school. She was very patient and thorough as she knowledgeably walked through her lessons. Always encouraging and with great attention to detail, she helped our daughter set and achieve ambitious goals. But above all, Emily's kindness and caring was what made her stand apart and made the difference in our daughters overall success. We highly recommend her. She is an excellent teacher.
Emily is an amazing teacher. Every week I looked forward to her lessons and she made it fun while learning. She challenged me and encouraged me if something was difficult. She was able to see my level of understanding and she adjusted my lessons. Emily didn't feel like a teacher, rather she felt like a friend. i would highly recommend her 10/10 - 5 Stars
I have known Emily for about two years, and I can attest that she is as passionate about learning as she is about teaching. Emily is an extremely experienced pedagogue, composer, and performer, and sharing her knowledge and experiences is immensely meaningful to her. Emily is professional, reliable, and dedicated; she is easy and pleasant to communicate with. In addition, Emily is very flexible and can easily adjust to any level and approach. I cannot recommend her higher!
Emily and I have collaborated for more than half a decade as performers, composers, and music theorists, and there are very few people I trust more to be able to provide approachable, detailed, and downright interesting explanations to all of my questions! I’ve seen her as a teacher with students of all ages and experience levels, and she never fails to tailor her vocabulary and material perfectly to the individual student.
