About Sarah

When young people think of science (in any form) they tend to be either enthusiastic and curious or uninterested and closed-off. As for myself, science (in all forms) is thrilling. To attempt to comprehend the most basic levels of science on a global, and even universal scale could take decades but it is well worth the study. Whether it be the way we interact with our environment or the way the Earth interacts within our solar system, science allows us to embrace the uncomfortable and challenge our innermost beliefs. My passion for this field guided me to a career of constant learning and discussion, also known as teaching.
Before entering the realm of formal teaching, I spent much of my time in fields related to environmental stewardship and action. Over the years I have worked with the Northwest Youth Corps, US Forest Service/AmeriCorps, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and ReThink Energy Florida. It was not until this last job (at ReThink Energy, a non-profit organization focused on environmental education and equitable energy for all) that I seriously considered teaching as an option. Here, I had the privilege of leading a Young Environmental Leaders Club for local high school students. My position with this company and my relationship with the students greatly impacted my view on education and led me to realize the immense value of helping students find their voice. After this ah-ha moment, I began taking certification courses and seeking out teaching positions, eventually landing me at an international school in Morocco.
Morocco has been the perfect home as I live a very active life, spending much of my time outside: practicing yoga, surfing, hiking, climbing, and playing beach volleyball. As for teaching, it has already taught me so much about the importance of adaptability, community, and communication. Though I have traveled throughout the US and many parts of South America, this was my first time working and living abroad. I have learned to appreciate and embrace various cultures, expand my worldview, and thrive in unknown territories. Most importantly, I have learned to create a safe environment for myself and my students: encouraging mental and physical health, honesty, and our intrinsic desire to learn. In my classroom, we think like scientists and act with compassion.

- My approach to tutoring involves interactive activities, kinesthetic learning techniques, and organizational and structural support.
- A typical lesson plan runs along the lines of
1. Starting with a Bell Ringer related to the subject matter
2. A quick review of recent materials
3. Short lecture with graphics and interactive opportunities
4. A hands-on activity that relates to the lesson and...
5. An Exit Slip that wraps up the topic and assesses new knowledge.
- I bring my compassion and creativity into the classroom (or online platform) while setting clear expectations for students. I encourage students to use their voices but also learn the importance of being impeccable with their words.
- These lessons are for Earth and Space/Environmental Science/Natural Science students in grades 6th through 12th.
