About Max

Hey! I’m studying Computer Science at Victoria University of Wellington, and French is my first language. I grew up in New Caledonia and have spoken French all my life, it’s honestly a big part of me. I love reading and singing in French, and what I really appreciate is how naturally the language fits into daily life and culture, connecting people in all sorts of ways.

I want to tutor because, let’s be real, languages aren’t always taught in a way that makes you actually want to learn them. Too often, students just memorize grammar but never get to enjoy the language itself. So I’d like to show that French can be fun and personal. Whether it’s books, music, movies, or whatever students already enjoy, I want to connect lessons to those interests and make French feel alive.

I’m pretty friendly, calm, and patient and I understand shy students because I’m shy too. Speaking a new language can feel really scary at first, so my goal is to make sure students feel comfortable enough to ask questions, mess up, and just grow at their own pace.

Thanks to babysitting and working as a camp counselor, I’ve gotten good at being someone younger people trust and feel relaxed around. I often hear I’m easy to talk to and chill, but also that I make people feel safe and heard. That’s exactly the kind of atmosphere I want to bring to my tutoring sessions.

About the lesson

I’d say my teaching style is all about being patient and encouraging. I try to shape each lesson around what the student needs. Since I speak both French and English, I can switch between them to make things easier and a lot less stressful for my students.

I’m especially interested in working with kids and teens who need some support with their French homework, want to get better at pronunciation, or just want to speak more confidently. Usually, I set up lessons based on what they’re struggling with. Sometimes that’s going through homework, sometimes it’s practicing real conversations, reviewing tricky vocabulary, or just tackling whatever feels hardest for them.

Most lessons run about an hour, but I’m happy to tweak the timing to fit the student’s schedule. I haven’t officially worked as a tutor yet, but I have plenty of experience helping friends with their French assignments and chatting with them to give them more practice. I'm also fairly comfortable with younger students, thanks to my experience babysitting and working as a camp counselor.
