About Jonathan
Open mic regulars eventually asked how I did what I did, which is how I honestly started teaching after years of gigging. I spent 9 years playing acoustic sets in small venues across the South and Southwest to build my craft. My formal education at USC with a BM in Popular Music provided the technical foundation for my performance work.
Working with self-taught players who need structure is where I feel most useful. Performance-focused students often come to me to fix their barre chords or refine their fingerpicking. I also help kids navigate the basics of reading tabs and sheet music.
Power chords and scales are part of the daily routine for me. Sometimes I still miss those early days of playing quiet coffee shops in the desert.

Starting out means we get your tuning and maintenance sorted during the first hour together. It feels grounded to focus on the basics of acoustic technique right away.
I provide a practice module with every lesson to keep momentum strong between our meetings. You will gain mastery over grade exam prep and songwriting ideas. Just show up ready to work.
Drawing on my USC training, we break down complex modes into manageable pieces. I enjoy watching students move past the frustration of their first few weeks.
