About Joseph

Hi there!

My name is Joe Phelan, I graduated from the University of Leicester with a First Class Masters degree in Physics in the summer of 2017. Since leaving university I have had a number of roles within the financial services industry, firstly on a graduate programme with the Royal Bank of Scotland before moving to a Hedge Fund called Millennium where I worked on a FX trading desk assisting a portfolio manager in navigating global markets effectively.

My first experience with tutoring was during my A levels where I tutored foundation level GCSE Mathematics students. I have a passion for Maths and enjoyed sharing that with people but many of the students I worked with struggled to engage with the content and so the challenge of making maths enjoyable to learn whilst covering the curriculum was something I drew great motivation from.

After graduating I spent a summer working within the Physics department at the University of Leicester assisting them in designing a foundation level course for students at a satellite university located in China. The focus of the material was to prepare students who had little prior experience in Physics for a degree level course and who didn't speak english as a first language. This was a challenge as I had to make the teaching materials engaging but also easy to digest and understand for someone who is not a native english speaker.

Primarily, my motivation to now become a tutor is to aide and motivate those students who may be struggling slightly to reach their full potential in a traditional class room environment. This was often how I felt during my A levels and I really only began to prosper during my time at University and the successful career I have built since. The opportunity to aide someone who is capable of a lot more than they are currently achieving is something I draw great motivation from and is something I can hopefully build a successful career doing.
