About Ash
Hey I’m Ash. A particular warm welcome to those starting out (adults and juniors)! I am a highly motivated English NM (National Master), based in Rotherhithe. I live and breathe chess, actively participating in London's vibrant chess scene, in which I belong to at least 4 clubs, chess is an essential component of my daily routine, and life!
OTB (Over the board) ECF rating 2200+. For Online chess, I am in the top 99.9/100% players on both Lichess- 2500+ in Rapid and Blitz. (2800+ bullet) and Chess(dot)com 2500+ Blitz, Rapid = 2460 (also 2800+ bullet).
Outside of chess I have a First-Class degree in Computer Science (graduated 2021), with a particular interest in AI and Chess Engines. But I am more into chess! As my choice for my final project demonstrates: I created a framework designed to compare the performances between the various free-source chess engines, by linking them up, getting them to play games and analysing the results.
My best results/achievements to-date in a nutshell include:
• Fide 2350+ rating performance in 2017/18 4NCL (The strongest chess league in the U.K), playing around half the games on board 2 in Division 1! Results against GMs (Grand Masters- the highest title available in chess barring World Champion), , IMs (International Masters, the title below Grand Master) and FMs (Fide Masters, the title below International Master), narrowly missing out on achieving an IM norm.
• Fide 2310+ rating performance (which included a win against a GM and a former European Women Champion) in 2019 Gibraltar Masters (Was one of the strongest open OTB tournaments in the world) with IM norm chances towards the end.
• Victories over world-class players like Indian Prodigy and the then World Junior 2018 runner-up (2nd place) GM Abimanyu Puranik ( albeit in OTB Blitz- a very fast time control, but really great to beat such a world-class player, by getting a nice game from start to finish) in 2019
• I participated in the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz teams championships 2025 in London, for Hammersmith, which won the U2200 team prize in the Rapid, playing against titled players (Mostly IMs and FMs) and in the blitz competed against some elite GMs (Vidit, Ivan Saric- in world top 30 and 70 respectively).
In regard to teaching- I have been doing more and more of it since 2023, I have worked 1-2-1 with ages 5-63, I have taught in after school clubs, managed teams of U9 and U11s and given voluntary lectures at chess clubs.
I have attended various high-level masterclasses and courses aimed at teaching chess to children (as young as 6)- most recently the Every Lesson Counts masterclass supported by FIDE (The World Chess Organization) and the FIDE EDU 34th Preparation of Teachers Course, becoming a newly qualified FIDE School Instructor. From those I was able to learn from the best, discover new strategies and practical resources to engage students, gain fresh insight and enrich my teaching practice.

Unleash Your Chess Potential: Personalized Coaching Awaits!
Are you ready to elevate your chess game, whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned tournament player? In our first (free and introductory!) session, I dive into understanding your aspirations and craft a personalized training plan just for you. Together, we'll tackle your weaknesses and build on your strengths, for beginners this may involve mastering the basics, for more advanced players this may vary from opening preparation (and creating a repertoire that suits the student’s playing style/preferences), strategic/positional play, endgames, tactics/calculation (the most important skill in chess) and the analysis of recent games (a vital part to improving your chess), focusing on the right areas to facilitate progress whilst ensuring that the process is enjoyable but challenging. I strongly believe that working on the weakest part of your game brings about the biggest improvement.
Getting into the right habits is a prerequisite to achieve success in chess.
I believe in the power of perseverance and fighting spirit—qualities I instill in my students to maximize their success. My journey through challenges (even outside of chess), like completing my studies during COVID lockdowns, has taught me resilience, which I bring to every lesson.
A few of my personal attributes that I consider to be real strengths are
- I am very perseverant- I keep going no matter how difficult things are, I have never withdrawn from any chess tournament: I always fight on and play the last round.
- I am very resistant to offering draws and I always try to fight it out, there are some very few exceptions where I may settle for quick draws (in a last round where a prize is at stake, with tournament pressure), but you don’t really learn anything from quick draws. I strive for these sort of fighting qualities in my students, to maximise chances of success and work hard at the board!
Online lessons will be conducted over MS teams and ChessBase/Lichess. Though am happy to travel (at additional fee, depending on distance) should face-to-face be preferred. In order to enhance the learning process, I send lesson materials and homework/ suggest chess sources (i.e books) to study after the lesson. I have collected a large source-base of chess material e.g. PGN (Portable Game Notation) files. My support does not end there and you can feel free to message me between lessons to ask questions or for advice, ensuring that you progress continues beyond our sessions.
Ready to transform your chess skills? Book your lesson today and let's embark on this exciting journey together!

Perfect! Ash is very knowledgeable and friendly and is very good at explaining key chess concepts to me, helping me to improve. Ash kindly went through several of my chess games before our first lesson and gave me some really useful personalised advice on how to improve. Ash was really quick to respond online to any questions I had and in arranging our first lesson. Thank you very much Ash for sharing your chess knowledge with me!
Perfect! Ash is clearly extremely skilled and experienced in both teaching and playing chess - his passion for the game shines through. My son found that Ash was able to quickly understand and assess his style and strategy by analysing previous games and offered very insightful and helpful advice. Thank you Ash!
