About Michael
I’m Michael Swim, a college geography instructor raised in Iowa City. I earned a B.A. in International Studies from the University of Iowa and an M.A. in Geography from California State University, Long Beach. As an undergraduate I moved among a few campuses, completed community-college and online credits, and played NCAA football and soccer before finishing at Iowa.
I have taught community college geography since 2015, first at Black Hawk College in Moline, Illinois, then at Northeast Iowa Community College. I currently teach at Baton Rouge Community College and in the University of Iowa Liberal Arts Beyond Bars program. This is my tenth consecutive year in the classroom, including dual-enrollment high school students. Each semester at BRCC I teach three asynchronous online courses I designed: Cultural Geography, World Regional Geography, and Introduction to Geography.
I am a human geographer. My work is in historical geography, political ecology, and nature-society relations. Early research looked at globalization, development, and sovereign debt. More recently I have written on the historical geographies of Iowa.
I am married with two children. I play disc golf and tennis, and I still get pulled into ancient world cartography. I tutor the same geography I already teach: AP Human Geography and introductory college courses.

I’m Michael. I currently teach geography at Baton Rouge Community College and in the University of Iowa Liberal Arts Beyond Bars program. This is my tenth consecutive year of community college and high-school dual-enrollment teaching. Each semester at BRCC I teach three asynchronous online courses I designed: Cultural Geography, World Regional Geography, and Introduction to Geography. I hold an M.A. in Geography, a History minor, and a historical-geography specialization.
The aim is straightforward. If you are in AP Human Geography, I will get you ready to ace the exam. If you are in an introductory college geography course — or dual-enrollment high school — I will get you to an A. Passing AP Human Geography, or earning that college A, is college credit before freshman year: fewer required courses later, less tuition, more time.
Lessons are for high-school AP students, dual-enrollment students, and college students in introductory geography. I also tutor AP World History: Modern, AP European History, and AP United States History when the writing and the map work overlap with what I already teach.
A session is built around what you actually have in front of you.
We start by naming the unit and the exact material — a chapter, a map, a set of terms, a practice prompt, or a paper you have to write. We isolate what is confusing, unpack it until it is usable, and then practice it the way it will be asked: AP exam questions for AP students, your instructor’s assignments and exams for college and dual-enrollment students.
You leave knowing the material and how it will show up on the test or in the course. Not a stack of extra worksheets. One clear next step.
What you get with me is a working college geography instructor, not a recap video. I already design and teach this content online every semester. I will meet you at the unit you are in, at the level you need, and keep the work pointed at the grade or the score you came for.
I teach online, weekdays and evenings. Select weekends by appointment. If you want the credit, the A, or the AP score, contact me.
