About Afni

I am an accomplished English language educator with over 15 years of experience specializing in the comprehensive teaching of Language Arts, including Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, Grammar, and Vocabulary. My instructional expertise encompasses a broad range of curricula, including the IGCSE syllabus, English Literature, Communicative English, and English for Specific Purposes (ESP). I am also highly experienced in preparing learners for globally recognized English proficiency examinations such as the IGCSE (English as a Second Language & First Language), IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, iB English, and MUET.

In 2012, I was awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship, through which I pursued advanced studies in American Literature at Northern Illinois University, USA. My academic journey also included specialized pedagogical training in Foreign Language Education at Syracuse University, New York, further enriching my global perspective and best practices on language teaching.

Notably, during my time in the United States as a Fulbright Scholar, I was also shortlisted as a final-stage candidate for the prestigious Chevening Scholarship—one of the UK’s most competitive and globally renowned scholarship programmes—for postgraduate study in the United Kingdom. This recognition reflects not only my academic excellence and leadership potential but also my commitment to continuous professional development on an international scale.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with a culturally diverse student base. Approximately 90% of my students are South Korean and Japanese learners, ranging from young learners to retirees (3 to 70+) years old. The remaining 10% of my learners hail from countries including Russia, Thailand, China, and several Middle Eastern nations.

Notably, I have worked closely and actively with the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and the Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE) in developing and delivering the Bahasa Melayu curriculum for American university students under the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) program. My contributions included designing syllabi, creating original teaching and assessment materials, and serving as one of the primary instructors. I also led teams of fellow educators, ensuring pedagogical consistency, cultural sensitivity, and instructional excellence throughout the program.

At the heart of my teaching philosophy is a strong commitment to student-centered learning, where every lesson is carefully designed to align with the individual needs, abilities, and aspirations of each learner. I believe that language learning should be both purposeful and engaging, which is why I integrate authentic teaching materials, educational technology, interactive language-based games, and music to create an immersive and stimulating classroom environment. My approach not only supports academic achievement but also nurtures real-world communicative competence. With near-native English proficiency and fluency in both British and American accents, I actively expose my students to a range of global English accents and cultural nuances. This equips them with the confidence and adaptability needed for authentic, effective communication in today’s interconnected world. Above all, I take pride in fostering a learning experience that is not only impactful and results-driven but also meaningful, relevant, and inspiring for every student I teach.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My love for English began at a young age. I was always fascinated by how language has the power to connect people, build confidence and open doors to opportunities unheard of. However, my passion for teaching developed later, especially when I realized how immensely life-changing it could be, if managed with genuine care, support and efficiency. I've always enjoyed being a part of my students' learning journey and private tutoring allows me the avenue to truly understand my students' strengths, struggles, learning styles and preferences. That personal connection that I develop with each individual student (and with their parents or guardians) is what makes the learning process that much more meaningful to me.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach English and over the past 17 years in local and international schools, colleges and universities, I've really enjoyed and focused on making lessons both meaningful and memorable. I especially take pride in crafting personalised learning materials that fit my students' learning abilities, readiness and preferences. Moreover, I enjoy transforming traditionally 'dry' components like grammar, listening or reading into engaging and interactive lessons by incorporating games and technology. My aim is not only building students' confidence but also competence. Perhaps the only real challenge that I face is when students do not care putting in consistent effort with their practice as I'm a firm believer in realizing true progress when it's a shared commitment.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I was fortunate to have several role models, from primary schools all the way through university, either in Malaysia or in the United States. What really inspired me was not only their vast knowledge but the genuine care they've always shown me and the way they've consistently guided me in achieving the fullest potential possible, beyond my own expectations. Their unwavering encouragement and support were what shaped my confidence and that had instilled in me the courage to keep striving higher in everything I do.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

If there's one principle I unreservedly believe in, it's that a good tutor should always be patient, possess and demonstrate a deep sense of empathy, and be genuinely invested in students' personal and academic growth. Every learner is unique, so a good tutor should always take the time to understand each learner's struggles, strengths, and capacity to grow. In addition to carefully selecting and crafting personalised learning materials, a good tutor should also be able to create a safe and supportive space where students feel comfortable enough to not only actively participate but also make mistakes without fear or judgment. I strongly believe students thrive when a tutor possesses these traits besides the other obvious attributes which go without saying like consistent encouragement, and commitment in building their confidence, learning progress and discipline that lasts beyond the lesson hours.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

To be completely honest, there have been a few moments in my teaching journey that have truly tugged at my heart. One particularly warm incident I still remember was when my students from South Korea or Japan, who were initially quite intimidated by learning English and were especially shy or afraid of making mistakes, gradually began speaking with greater confidence after only a few weeks of lessons with me. Another touching moment occurred when a student's parents flew all the way from South Korea after just two months of my teaching their child, simply to meet me in person. They expressed how deeply grateful and delighted they were when they witnessed how remarkably their child had improved in speaking English. They even brought thoughtful gifts all the way from South Korea. There have also been several other deeply moving moments like this that will remain forever ingrained in my heart, and all of them continue to make my teaching journey even more meaningful and worthwhile.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

One of the most common challenges that I face when teaching English is helping my students overcome their fear of making mistakes and assuring them that it is alright to make mistakes. Many students I find, especially those from non-English speaking backgrounds or families, more often than not feel intimidated initially and hesitant to even try speaking, for fear of being embarrassed. This can sometimes create a challenge in itself for me as a teacher because as much as I want my students to acquire the language accurately and proficiently, I also have to make sure that whatever little basic concepts or understanding that they possess, should be put to use so their reluctance can actually create a communication barrier. So my challenge has always been to first establish not only a non-judgmental attitude but also an encouraging environment where they feel comfortable and safe expressing themselves. As their teacher, my task is always building their confidence step by step and this is not limited to positive reinforcement, scaffolding, meaningful conversation and practical language use. In addition to that, crafting my lessons to suit each student's unique learning styles, proficiency levels and preferences continue to remain another challenge but I never let these beat me as I always see it as an opportunity to become more creative and show up as an effective and responsive educator to my students. To say that witnessing my students transform from shy learners into confident speakers has made these challenges incredibly rewarding would be a profound understatement.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion always lies deeply in teaching, but more to the point, it's always been about helping students develop confidence through language. Seeing when my student realizes he/ she can express their thoughts effectively in another language truly makes me happy. Beyond teaching English, I love having thought-provoking and meaningful conversations with my students and I always try my best to inspire them to be passionate and curious about the world, encourage them to be critical in their thinking and instilling in them that it's crucial to 'nurture' the thirst and love for 'lifelong learning'.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

Well I have to say that the thing that gives me utter joy is not only teaching English but the genuine care and dedication that I give each student. This stays even after the lesson hours or until they've reached adulthood. Most of my students who have gone to further their studies at universities have never failed to contact me, letting me know how much they miss me or appreciate what I've done for them. For me, genuine care for a student's learning growth, learning styles, challenges etc. goes beyond delivering the lessons, it is more than that, it's more about showing up and connecting with the student, trying to understand them and appreciate the unique qualities that they possess. I consider it truly fortunate that I've been able to see many students achieving significant improvements in their English learning journey and their growth continues to inspire me as an educator. So, what makes me a Superprof? To me it's being an educator who's fully committed, genuinely care and devoted in helping every student achieve their goals.
