About Devon

Devon is a college undergraduate sophomore majoring in International Relations & Global Studies. His focus is primarily on US-Asia relations and Asian culture. This year, he wrote several research papers, covering topics such as the emergence of the pop idol industry in Japan, an analysis of The Three Teachings and the principles which influenced Chinese poetry, and an in-depth look at the origins of Sanskrit in India. All of these topics required dedicated research taken from online databases, published books and journals, and classic poetry (which is cited differently from normal quotes!)

In his free time, Devon loves to learn languages, listen to music, and spend time with his pets. His dream is to one day travel the world, but for now, he is content with writing about it from his bedroom.

About the lesson

Five-page essay got you down? Feeling overwhelmed, don't know where to start? Luckily, I have discovered the secret formula that allows you to write an essay at any moment on any topic! As an International Relations major, my assignments consist entirely of essays and research papers. With a 3.8 GPA, this method hasn't failed me yet.
In my lessons, I will introduce you to the structure of a written essay, starting with the importance of a strong thesis statement. I will help you plan out and organize your research ahead of time so that you are always on track. I will teach you ways to verify your sources and correctly cite them in Chicago, APA, and MLA format. Plus, I will provide helpful tips to improve your writing. What's the difference between an active and passive voice? What's the problem with prepositions? Why should your introduction paragraph be the last thing you write? I will teach you everything and more in my lessons!
I understand that everyone learns differently and struggles in varying areas. That is why I want to approach you to understand what your goals are. I will work one on one with you to create a personal lesson plan that highlights your specific needs. I want you to improve your writing and succeed even after your time with me is over.
Remember, strong written communication is a wonderful asset to have in this technologically advancing world. More than ever, it is important to write clearly and articulately as most of the time we aren't talking face to face (or zoom to zoom). Emails, news articles, advertisements, and cover letters are a few examples of why knowing how to write is crucial to your success. I will give you the tools that you need to not only survive your writing assignments but to prepare you for a future full of written communication.
Trust me, your outlook will change forever. You will knock essays out with a breeze, and they might even become...fun!? Oh no! Well, maybe that's just me. But, hey, if it's fun then it won't feel so scary, right?
