About Maheen
Hi! I am Maheen, and I genuinely love helping students make sense of subjects that can initially feel intimidating or overwhelming. I know from my own experience as a student that sometimes the hardest part isn’t the material itself, but finding someone who can explain it in a way that actually clicks.
I’m a Columbia University graduate with an MA in Political Science, as well as a graduate of the London School of Economics (LSE), where I studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics. I also have experience teaching university-level students as a Teaching Assistant for a PhD-level Mathematics and Statistics for Political Science course at Columbia.
My teaching focuses primarily on Political Science, Government, International Relations, Political Economy, Economics, Development, Quantitative Methods, Mathematics, and Statistics. I especially enjoy helping students who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure where to begin.
I believe good tutoring should be supportive, encouraging, and tailored to the individual student. I don’t expect everyone to learn in the same way, so I adapt my explanations and pace to what works best for you.
Whether you are preparing for an exam, working through a difficult problem set, writing an essay, learning quantitative methods, or simply trying to build a stronger foundation, I’m here to help you feel more confident with the material.
My goal is not just to help you get the right answer, but to help you understand why it’s right and leave each lesson feeling a little more capable than when you started.

Looking for a tutor who can help you understand the material, strengthen your analytical skills, and succeed in your coursework and exams?
I am an Ivy-League and LSE graduate specializing in Political Science, Government, International Relations, Political Economy, Economics, Development, Quantitative Methods, Mathematics, and Statistics.
I hold an MA in Political Science from Columbia University, and a BSc in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) from the London School of Economics (LSE). My academic training has given me a strong interdisciplinary foundation across politics, government, economics, mathematics, statistics, and research methods.
I also served as a Teaching Assistant for Columbia University's PhD-level Mathematics and Statistics for Political Science course, where I taught weekly discussion seminars and graded problem sets covering linear algebra, multivariate calculus, optimization, probability, and statistics.

Coursework and exam preparation
I have extensive experience conducting, editing, and communicating academic research, including research papers, undergraduate and MA capstones, quantitative research projects, and academic publications. I have also edited research papers in international relations, political economy, and comparative politics.
My Teaching Approach
I believe tutoring should be about more than memorizing information for an exam. My goal is to help you understand the underlying concepts and develop the ability to solve problems and analyze arguments independently.
For political science and government, this means going beyond memorizing theories or political events and learning how to evaluate arguments, compare explanations, understand institutions, interpret evidence, and construct strong analytical responses.
For economics, mathematics, and statistics, I break difficult concepts down step-by-step and focus on both the intuition and the technical reasoning behind them.
I tailor lessons to each student's level and goals. Whether you are:
Preparing for an exam
Struggling with a difficult course
Working through a problem set
Writing an essay or research paper
Learning statistics or econometrics
Learning R or Stata
Preparing for university-level coursework
Trying to strengthen your overall academic performance
—I can adapt the lessons to what you need.
Bring your course materials, readings, assignments, problem sets, or questions, and we can work through them together.
